Recipe Schema Not Working Properly

    Hello!

I run a recipe site and since Google emailed me to change all posts to the recipe schema I tried to do that with Rank Math. However, when I put the text into the Instruction Type field (any of them, for that matter) and update the post, the page displays a single chunk of text, instead of consecutive steps.

When I right-click and go to Inspect Element on the post page, I see quotation marks at the beginning and end of the instructions. Shouldn’t there be <p> at the beginning and </p> at the end of each paragraph?

You can see an example of this here.

Can you please help me fix this issue. I want to continue using RankMath; I like it and got used to it. But I really need to get this done as soon as possible.

Looking forward to hearing from you guys!

    Cosmin.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Just to be sure, in the Recipe Schema did you changed this field from “Single Field” to another like “How To Step”?

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

Yes. I tried all 3 of them. I got the same result.

    Hello,

You seem to have added your recipe manually on your post. To add it from your schema settings, you should use the [rank_math_rich_snippet] shortcode. If you use the single field option, the instructions are displayed as paragraph. You can use for example, the how to section or how to step option to show a list of steps/sections.

Please check the screencast attached in the sensitive section where I have made changes to your post( which I reverted) to show you how to create the instructions and display them in the front-end using the rich snippets shortcode.

Hope this helps you. Thank you.

    Thank you!

I thought selecting the “review location” to where I wanted the recipe card to show would be the right thing to do and that’s because once you make a selection, the shortcode disappears from the options.

Is the resulting snippet indexable? Can I remove the same text (ie instructions) from the post section? How can I edit the colors to make the steps match my site’s color scheme?

    Hello,

Yes, the snippet itself is indexable since it is added to the schema data. You can check it in a published post where you have the recipe enabled but not displayed by going to the official Google Tool here: https://search.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool and testing the URL, you will see it has the Recipe structured data.

About editing the colors, we provide the snippet without style so anyone can make it match the design they want. In your case, you will need to add some CSS code to your theme to customize the snippet with the style you prefer.

    Looking forward to help you.

Thanks for the answers! I think a field where one could insert a color code for certain elements would make things a lot easier for those of us who have no coding experience. Maybe you guys would consider adding some style options to the next update.

Another problem I noticed is that the plugin doesn’t count the words in the schema data. To avoid both duplicate content and redundancy on my page, I removed the instructions from the article part of the post and pasted them into the schema fields, as you guys have shown me. But now the word count went significantly down, which clearly shows that the text I put into the schema fields are not being counted to the words in the article. This, in turn, reduces my SEO score.

    Hello,

This should not worry you if the text is appearing in the front-end. The checks by Rank math are more of a guideline to help you optimize your page/post SEO. The tests score is just for your reference and doesn’t affect your site indexing or ranking. and does not need to be followed religiously.

Hope that helps. If you have any further question(s), please let us know. Thank you.

Hi! I’m back with an issue on the recipe schema. I just tested some pages where I implemented your advice. I did a Rich Results Test and I got some error results. I have attached two screenshots, so you can see which warnings and errors I refer to.

I understand that such errors and warnings are likely to affect my rankings. Evidently, I want to improve my rankings.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

It seems I can’t attach any images. This is the URL I tested: https://quailegg.recipes/kim-kardashians-blueberry-oatmeal-pancakes/.

And this is the tool I used: https://search.google.com/test/rich-results.

I hope you can see the same results.

Managed to add the screenshots, so you guys can see the errors.

Still waiting to hear from you.

    Opening a new ticket.

    Hi,

I do not see any errors:
    https://search.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool/u/0/

Your Recipe Schema seems to be appearing in SERPS too and even in the Rich Snippets preview.

I recommend ignoring the errors as not all Schema types are support for the eligibility test in the tool you linked to.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Hello,

Since we did not hear back from you for 15 days, we are assuming that you found the solution. We are closing this support ticket.

    Thank you.
