    Hello

We are facing the issue from the December 2018 for our site and getting an error of “couldn’t fetch” in sitemap report. Our Pages are deindexed acc. to coverage report and we lost our rankings in the result of that…

I’m getting this when doing “live Test’ in the console for sitemap-

Discovery: Not checked in live tests

    CrawlTime – May 18, 2019, 5:16:27 PM
    Crawled as: Googlebot smartphone
    Crawl allowed? Yes
    Page fetch: Successful

    Indexing
Indexing allowed? No: ‘noindex’ detected in ‘X-Robots-Tag’ http header
    User-declared canonical: N/A
Google-selected canonical: Only determined after indexing

But I’m Unable to “View Tested Page” in the console; it remains unclickable and shows page was not fetched.

from december our sitemap crawls in April, 2-3 days continually and then again show error from 14 April. and last read time, or anything else nothing changed in report. there is only error…

Tried many plugins, verify hosting, site, configurations, removed sitemap, resubmit sitemap but nothing happen.
We are on Kinsta and they said: As you saw in the HTTP header for post-sitemap.xml, it’s returning HTTP200 without any headers that would cause errors.
    and said tocontact with you..
kindly figure out the issue and solve the issue…
    Waiting for your response…
    Thanks

    Hello,

We are so sorry about that.

Please add access to s******@r*********** as well or you can wait for Michael to come online and check for you.

You want GSC access on that mail?

    Hello,

Yes, we would like to ask you to add that email in Search Console, so our team can take a look at the issue.

Thank you. Looking forward to helping you.

    Hello

    I Added kindly check now…

    any update?

    Hello,

Sorry for the late reply. We are still investigating this issue, and we will get back to you soon.

    Thank you for your patience.

    any upate?

    Hello,
We have investigated the issue and it looks like the problem is on Google’s side. We have not received reports of such issue from other users, neither could we reproduce the issue on our test setups.

Other Search Console users are facing the same issue, and the conclusion is that it is a bug in the new Search Console: https://support.google.com/webmasters/thread/3836590?msgid=3847309

Thus, the only place you could get help for this is in the Search Console Support forum: https://support.google.com/webmasters/community?hl=en
I would suggest opening a ticket there.

    Hope that helps.

There is no help regarding that from them…

can you tell me why rank math is unable to ping whenever we publish anything new on-site…?
according to you, is google crawling the sitemap?

    Hello,

Rank Math does ping Google a few minutes after you publish or delete any post that appears in the sitemap, but even if that wouldn’t work, we should be able to fix this by making changes on the Search Console, to force it to re-crawl. Even on its own, without doing anything, Google should periodically re-crawl the sitemap, but for some reason that doesn’t seem to happen on your site.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell if Google actually crawls your sitemap or not, it’s certainly possible that it does, and just shows incorrect data in the Search Console. As long as you see your newly published content appearing in the search results, you shouldn’t worry to much about it: the sitemap does not affect rankings, it just helps Google find all your content.

One way to know if Google is crawling your sitemap is by monitoring the access logs: you can check when Googlebot accesses any of your .xml sitemap files.

I’m sorry we can’t be of more help here.

    Hello

I checked access log files but google bot was crawling another sitemap on 29th May which we generated with google sitemap generator plugin. but on 29th may it was removed from sites and console. so I not sure how google finds that to crawl…

I know that sitemap has no effect on rankings. but during the starting when our rankings dropped and issues started with a sitemap, I found that our pages were in no indexed reports in GSC. SO I have doubt that google there is an issue with crawling/indexing due to sitemaps…

One more thing you can try is this: go to Rank Math > Dashboard, and deactivate the Sitemap module, then go to Plugins > Add New, and install the Google XML Sitemaps plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

Try using that for a few days and see if that makes any difference. Please let us know your findings.

By the way, personally I think this issue would resolve by itself sooner or later, without doing anything, because the issue is on Google’s side, but I might be wrong.

If there’s anything, please let us know. Thank you.
