Google not indexing pages

As discussed in this thread (https://support.rankmath.com/ticket/no-urls-indexed-at-many-sites/#post-7360), my posts are marked with nothing in the Robots Meta section under the Advanced Tab in each post’s edit screen. Google has just notified me of a total of about 50 posts on two of my sites which are marked “noindex.” They are not marked noindex, but they do not have “index” marked under Advanced. I think Google is interpreting this as the same as “noindex.”

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

You forgot to share the site URL on the sensitive data section, please share this info so that we can take a look at this issue for you.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the access.

I have inspected the page source on several posts and none has been set to noindex.
Please delete the current sitemap on your GSC and clear your site cache and then resubmit a new sitemap. This should fix the issue.

I hope this info helps. Thank you.

Never mind – figured it out. Will let you know if this works.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the follow up.

I am glad that you were able to isolate the cause of the issue.

Please let us know if the issue persists. Thank you.

Google has not “validated” the issue yet – the pages are still waiting in queue and it can take several days according to their site. I will definitely update you with the result when it happens. Thanks for your help!

    Hello,

Do let us know how it goes.

Help! The problem only got worse. I now have far more pages that GSC says are marked no-index. I can’t figure out what’s going on. Most of them are the ones that are not marked with anything under your Advanced tab, but some of them are marked “index” and still Google says they’re “noindex.” And I can clearly see from the source code that they are not marked noindex. I’m not having this problem on sites not using RankMath. Could it be a sitemap issue?

I’ve gone back to the SEO Framework for now. I’d like to continue using RankMath if we can figure this out. But for now, I’m going to redo the Validation in GSC and see if that fixes the problems. If so, we know there’s something up with RankMath. If not, then we know it isn’t RankMath and I’ll really be at a loss. I’ve been doing this for 15 years, never seen anything like this.

I’m very confused because in GSC, when I go into Sitemaps, it certainly looks like it’s discovering URLs through your sitemaps like it should.

    Hi,

I am so sorry about that.

I am curious to know how it works on SEO Framework.

    Please do keep us posted.

Meanwhile, we are testing this internally.

I appreciate that you’re still looking into this and will let you know what happens with the validation either way. If there’s anything I can give you access to or screenshots of, please let me know. I’d like to help.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the follow up.

We will let you know if we need to do some testing on your site and if we uncover anything on our test environments.

    Thank you.

Just FYI: I’m still waiting for Google to validate, but the number of pages supposedly marked “no index” has fallen a little. I’ve been manually checking each URL in the URL inspector, and the ones that are not indexed by Google all say this: “No: ‘noindex’ detected in ‘robots’ meta tag.” But again, as we’ve discussed, I can see in the source code that they are NOT marked noindex. In fact, a text search of the source code doesn’t show the words “noindex” or “robots” anywhere in there. Is this how it should be? My indexed pages also don’t have a robots meta tag, so I assume that’s okay.

ETA: with further testing, I see that deactivating my SEO plugin brings back the robot meta tag. Activating Yoast (which I used first) or SEO Framework strip the tag out. Weirdly, I just tested re-activating Rank Math, and it put the robot meta tag back in. It’s <meta name=”robots” content=”follow,index”/>, which is correct and also what I see in the source code of Rank Math’s home page. I just can’t figure out what Google is doing.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the update.

It takes quite a while for the validation process to complete and thus some patience will be needed from your end.
Please note that some SEO plugins do not add the robots meta tag on the < head > section of the page and this is why it may not be appearing.
I am confident that once validation is complete the issue will be resolved.

Let me know if you have additional questions. Thank you.

Well, if you’ll recall, I switched my sites to The SEO Framework and we’re waiting on validation based on it, not Rank Math. The idea being to see if the problem really is Rank Math or not.
