    Rank Math free

    Hi,

Just like requested here https://support.rankmath.com/ticket/i-want-to-change-the-path-url-for-sitemap-of-my-website I’d like to change my sitemap url for security reasons. In that link I pointed to, you don’t seem to totally understand what the point of this is. It’s NOT to hide it from Google or bots, it’s to hide it from competitors who take advantage of sitemaps to find posts not publicly published in the website. There can be many reasons for that, so please no discussions about that.

I see many people look for ways to rename the xml path, so is this possible?

  • Hello

Thank you for contacting the support.

As much as we would introduce a filter in the plugin to change the URL, it is not possible anymore ever since WordPress brought the Sitemaps in the core.

WordPress’s default URL of a Sitemap is:
    https://rankmath.com/sitemap.xml

and to make it work with any SEO/Sitemap plugin, we need to redirect that URL to the Sitemap generated by the Rank Math plugin.

As far as your competitors are concerned, no one usually looks for a Sitemap file. Such people crawl your entire website using 3rd party tools like ScreamingFrog, Sitebulb, Ahrefs, etc.

With that being said, there are existing feature requests, so we’ve added your vote to our internal suggestions lists. If your suggestions are something that we’re able to introduce, we’ll be sure to let you know.

It’s not true in my case that they can crawl with spiders to find the posts because the posts are not published on the front page and no posts link to them. They are only created for ranking purposes and submitted directly to Google.

I simply want to make it harder for competitors to find the sitemap. It’s pretty crazy how hard it is to simply just change the url of the sitemap to make it harder to find.

    Hello,

Sorry to disappoint but that feature is unfortunately not available at this time.

Just saying, if someone has to find such URLs, they can find them on Google using the site:websitename operator. But, we can understand your concern.

You can disable the Sitemap module in the Rank Math plugin if you find some other Sitemap plugin providing that feature.

Hope that helps. If there’s anything else we can help you with, please let us know.

    Thank you.

Hi, yes they can but they won’t since they don’t know what to look for. Hence why they try to find the sitemaps. Either way, a random sitemap url makes things harder for 99% of them.

Since you do not provide this option I cannot use your plugin and will have to delete it. Thank you.

    Hello,

We are sorry to see you go.

If you decide to use the plugin in the future, please let us know.

We are here to assist. Thank you.
