404 errors when updating or deleting categories

I have a problem related to woocommerce categories. Whenever I add a new category (or even delete a product category), all the other categories (including the added one) turn to 404 errors. Any help with that?

    Hi,

Could you please check the screencast we shared? If there is something we are missing, please record a screencast using loom.com and share with us. I think we are not on the same page here.

    Thank you.

I believe the issue is related to htaccess. Because to solve the problem, I generate always a new htaccess to get links back from being 404.

Now an error says .htaccess file is not writable.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

About your not writable .htacess file, try to follow this guide to solve that problem: https://docs.wp-rocket.me/article/626-how-to-make-system-files-htaccess-wp-config-writeable

Let us know after you try it so we can help you further.

    Looking forward to help you.

I have done all of that. It’s not related to that. Its a Rank Math issue. Once I disable Rank Math, the problem becomes solved. The issue is on “Remove category base” settings on Rank Math.

To solve 404 categories, I usually go to Dashboard > Settings > Permanent Links, then I change the links to be “plain”, then I return the settings to the previous links display “post name”. But I have to keep doing this any time I add a new category.

    Hi,

Of course this would only happen when Rank Math is enabled because you are using the remove category base option in Rank Math and that option gets disabled when Rank Math is disabled.

However, that doesn’t mean Rank Math is the cause. That just means the option we offer is not working for you for some reason. Most likely, your .htaccess is not working properly. The records don’t seem to get recorded correctly or they are reverted after a while.

I would recommend keeping the remove category base option disabled if your web hosting provider can’t provide insight on why the .htaccess file is not working correctly.

Alternatively, you could use a separate plugin to strip the base from URLs.

As far as Rank Math’s remove category base option is concerned – it is working correctly but doesn’t continue to work due to .htaccess restrictions.

I wish we could help further on this but your web hosting provider is the one you should talk about your .htaccess file issues.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

I have thought about using an alternative to “remove category base” feature by using a plugin. But I was waiting for a solution. I have talked with the hosting days ago and said there is no issue with .htaccess.

Thank you very much for your help

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

Could you please test out this plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/woo-permalink-manager/ and let us know if it will work correctly?

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

I have used the plugin shared (Premmerce Permalink Manager), and it’s working fine without issues.

I have as well tested Rank Math in a new woocommerce website with new hosting and enabled “remove category base”, and it results in a 404 error when adding a new category.

Be careful with Premmerce, it worked for a bit then errors started happening again for me. I’ve moved hosting and so far so good, but may also be because no new categories have been created since.

What About Permanent Link Manager (https://permalinkmanager.pro/)? Is it compatible with Rank Math?

Hi Ben, that’s what i would choose, more features and control – i believe you can setup whatever slug you like with that, on pages, posts, categories, products, product categories etc. But not used in a while.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

Permanent Link Manager is a good alternative as well as Matt pointed out.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.
