XML Parsing Error: not well-formed Location: https://***.com/sitemap_index.xml

    Hi I got an error in Google console which I noticed back on November 5th saying my sitemap was not working. I checked and the page was returning a 404. I flushed the cache via the permalink method and reopend the file in Chrome and it seemed to be working.

    However, since that day my Google Search Console has showed a 50% drop in impressions and a 41% drop in clicks. Many queries I was previously ranking in the top 10 for are currently receiving 0 searches. I decided to check the sitemap again. I opened it in Chrome and it looked fine. I had a colleague check it on their machine and it returned an XML error which I will post in the sensitive data section.

    I decided to open the XML file in an incognito window and I got the same error. I also tried to open the file in FireFox and got the same error. I’ve looked through the help area but am not finding an answer. I checked my functions.php file for any extra space and there was none.

    I really need to get this figured out, please get in touch ASAP.

  • Update: I’m using SG Optimizer plugin

    I’ve added the sitemap URLs to be excluded from the cache. I’ve also excluded the sitemap URLs from HTML minification and I’m still getting the same error.

    Hello,

    Sorry for the issue you are facing.

    Assuming you are using the latest version of all the plugins and the themes (please update if not yet), it would seem like a conflict with one of the plugins or the theme you are using.

    To determine that, please follow this troubleshooting guide:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/

    Do keep only Rank Math, Rank Math PRO, and WooCommerce enabled and see if the issue persists.

    Only the site admin would know and your users won’t be affected by this troubleshooting. Please let me know if you find the conflicting plugin/theme.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Hi Uzair,

    This method will not work for me. The sitemap_index.xml file displays as it should when I am logged into WordPress. I only see the errors when trying to access https://www.nearform.com/sitemap_index.xml from a browser that is not logged into WordPress, i.e. FireFox or Chrome Incognito.

    I found a solution,
    SG Optimizer blocks the sitemap, I’ve to disable the HTML Minify option

    Hello,

    @Davide
    , we are glad you were able to find a solution to your issue.

    @Craig
    Milam, please check the solution provided by @Davide and let us know if it works for you too.

    If it doesn’t, we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

    It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    We really look forward to helping you.

    Hi, so my sitemap is now validating on https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ – I imagine it has to do with excluding the sitemaps from HTML minification as well. Strangely when I try to visit the page in Chrome Incognito mode it displays a completely blank page. There are also no errors in Google either.

    Hello,

    You have marked the ticket as resolved, do you still need help with this?
