Wrong canonical and rel=”prev/next” missing on pagination pages

    Hello,

I realized that the rel=”next” and rel=”prev” tags are missing in my pages and pagination pages. As you know, those tags are a very useful hint for Google to understand what is an archive with paginations, and prevent bot from detecting pagination pages as duplicated content.

Plus, all pagination pages have the first page as canonical, instead of refering to themselves, which is what Google recommends.

    How can I solve this?

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

Google announced sometime last year that it is no longer taking rel=prev/next tags into account. To avoid duplicate content for paginated pages, I would recommend going to WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Misc Pages and enable the Noindex Paginated Pages option.

You can use this filter to change canonical URLs per your preference:

Please note that we do not offer support for customizations that are not part of the plugin. If you are note familiar with coding, you can consult a coder to customize the filter for your situation. Do note that we neither support this type of edit and neither do we recommend doing this having provided the reason above already.

    Thanks for the reply.

Still, I have to insist. It is true that Google is no longer taking rel=prev/next tags into account. But when the canonical is wrong, tags could be taken as a hint by Google, in order to understand our pagination systems.

Avoid paginations pages to get indexed is not a good solution in my case. Pagination pages are important to transmit pagerank and keep your old content linked, among other things.

So, the real problem is with canonicals. Thanks for the resource, I will try that solution, but I think that you should add to your plugin an easy way to deal with the canonicals on pagination pages. Nowadays, to have the right canonicals is mandatory in SEO. Each page with unique content must have its own unique canonical.

I hope you to take it into consideration.

    Best regards!
