Where is Sitemap file located? When does it refresh?

    Hello,

    I have made some changes to permalinks structure, I was supposing that sitemap will update itselft when I hit update button in the page but it does not seems so.

    I have made changes yesterday and today, but site map reports to be updated four days ago.

    I have disabled the sitemap function in sitemap and enabled it again to see if that could solve, nothing has changed.

    So I have made an FTP connection to my server and I was looking for the file sitemap_index.xml in the domain root but I was not able to see such file.

    So my questions are:

    1. how can I force sitemap update when I change a page content or permalink structure?

    2. where is sitemap file located?

    Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

    1. The sitemap is updated automatically. You can force it to be refreshed by saving your permalinks but it shouldn’t be necessary. Are you using any cache plugin?

    2. Rank Math uses several sitemaps but the core one (the one you have to add to the Google Search Console) is https://yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml

    Ok thanks perfect for confirmation of that,

    I see now that page structure is updated, is main sitemap file date that is old, not the structure.

    So abaut this main file located at:

    https://yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml

    why I cannot see it when I connect via ftp to the server?

    I have searched in .htaccess file to see if it was hidden somewhere but I do not find anything about. I am confused because the link works but file seems not there…

    The sitemaps are “virtual sitemaps” so that is the reason why you don’t find the files but you can navigate to their URLs.

    I am courious, what does it mean “virtual sitemaps”?
    How are them managed by wordpress or the server?

    Hello,

    Virtual sitemaps mean there are no files (sitemaps) stored on the website. They are managed by the Rank Math plugin, when someone requests the sitemaps, Rank Math provides them dynamically.
