    Hello Team

We have a query regarding URLs. We earlier had a url for all our posts (Eg- websitename.com) which was crawled by Google and was updated in Google Search Console(GSC). Later, we included CDN and post that the url changed to http://www.websitename.com

Post adding CDN when we tried crawling the pages on GSC, we got a message for particular pages that Google treats these pages as canonical urls. We went ahead and submitted the new (www) urls in GSC. But in GSC we are not getting any new impressions on the new urls www

    So our query is :-

    1) Should we redirect the pages to new www urls ? If yes, then should we just give a command of 301 Redirect from websitename.com to http://www.websitename.com ?

    And/or

    2) Should we change canonical url for every post ? If yes, then which url should be mentioned in the canonical box – the websitename.com or http://www.websitename.com ?

    Please suggest. Thanks

Note:- Website name is provided in sensitive data section

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

Why not do both things? Canonical will make Google understand that the www version is the right one (even if you have backlinks pointing to the non-www version) and the 301 redirections will make any non-www version to be redirected to the www one so you make sure in Google Search Results is displayed only the www version.

I would set up a redirection in the .htaccess redirecting all the URLs in the non-www version to the new one and then make sure the canonicals are using the format http://www.website.com (or https if you have SSL certificate).

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.
