The “sitemap Temporary processing error” in Google Search Console can be due to various reasons. One common cause is an issue with the sitemap setup. To troubleshoot this, you can follow these steps:

    1. Rename the Sitemap File: According to Google’s John Mueller, changing the name of the sitemap file can sometimes resolve this issue. You can do this by adding a new sitemap in Google Search Console with the URL `https://rankmath.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Couldnt-fetch-error-in-Google-Search-Console-1.png Here is a guide on how to do it: Troubleshooting the “Couldn’t Fetch” Error in Google Search Console

    2. Fix Sitemap Issues: If renaming the sitemap file doesn’t work, you may need to address any underlying sitemap issues. Ensure that your sitemap is set up correctly by following the steps outlined in this guide: Rank Math Sitemap Issues and Their Fixes

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and bringing your concern to our attention.

According to Google, it is a temporary error on Google’s end and should be resolved independently.

However, one of the causes is that the sitemaps list too many URLs. We checked your sitemap and we can see Rank Math already split your main sub-sitemaps according to the numbers set on Links Per Sitemap:

The solution to this is to split the sitemaps into smaller URL.

For initial troubleshooting, please Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp to ensure that your sitemaps are not getting cached:

Then further split the sitemap more so that each has fewer URLs. If you want to split it more, then you can decrease the numbers in Rank Math > Sitemap Settings > General > Links Per Sitemap: https://rankmath.com/kb/configure-sitemaps/#links-per-sitemap

After this, you can resubmit the sitemap.

Hope that helps and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.

i am deleting a lot of posts at the moment as they are old posts. once they have been deleted, will they vanish from the sitemap

    Hello,

Yes, deleted posts will be removed from the sitemap automatically.

If you don’t see that behavior is because the sitemap is being cached and as such the following can be followed to re-generate the sitemap after the deletion: https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

would you be able to look at my sitemap. i have found a page that has been on my site for a long time and now it says

    No referring sitemaps detected

    https://www.in2town.co.uk/skegness/24-hours-in-skegness-lincolnshire/

    Hello,

The “no referring sitemap detected” means the page has been discovered by Google, and Google knows about it.

Please note that a sitemap is only one of many ways Google discovers the URLs of your site. If Google discovers the URL through other means, it may not cross-reference your sitemap to check if the URL is there. Hence the “No referring sitemaps” message.

Hope that helps and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.

can you explain more about this and how to do it
The solution to this is to split the sitemaps into smaller URL.

    Hello,

To “split” the sitemaps into smaller sitemaps with a lesser number of URLs you have to reduce the “Links Per Sitemap” from WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > Sitemap Settings.

This setting determines how many URLs are included in each sitemap file.

By splitting your sitemap into smaller chunks, you make it more manageable for search engines to process and index your content. This can help prevent issues like the “Temporary processing error” you’ve been experiencing.

After splitting your sitemap, you may need to resubmit the sitemap to Google Search Console to ensure that the search engine is aware of the changes.

should we be using %seo_title% or %title%

i dont understand the difference. i have it set as %seo_title% but in a guide it says it should be jsut title

    can you explain

    Hello,

Rank Math uses the %title% variable in the SEO description and this variable will display the title of the current post or page.

You can read more about variables available in Rank Math here: https://rankmath.com/kb/variables-in-seo-title-description/

    Hope that helps.

what i am trying to find out is, under schema
Headline what should i have there and under and under description. at the moment under title i have %seo_title%

    Hello,

The %seo_title% variable will take the title meta from the snippet where the %title% is set by default. See screenshot below:

thank you. can i ask if you can look at my sitemap and let me know if it is now correct. i have removed more than 40,000 posts which were not more than 500 words and have kept 15,000 important posts. i need to make sure that google has access to all my posts to reindex them because for somee reason they have deindex them

so to make it clear which one should i use, really sorry about not being technical

The %seo_title% variable will take the title meta from the snippet where the %title% is set by default. See screenshot below:

    Hello,

You mentioned you’ve 15,000 posts but we can see there are only 988 posts on your sitemap. In this case, can you please confirm if all the posts on your website are set to index and have the self-referencing canonical? You can share some affected post URLs with us so that we can check the issue further for you.

Regarding the variables, the %title% variable will display the title of the current post or page whereas the %seo_title% variable will fetch the data from the title you have set in the meta box.

Now, if you want to use the variable in the schema, you can use the %seo-title% variable but if you want to use this in the Rank Math SEO meta box > Edit Snippet > Title field then you’ll have to use the %title% variable.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.
