Sitemap Redirects To Homepage and Being Rejected by Google as HTML

  • I’ve been trying to submit a sitemap to Google without success. Google insists my sitemap is HTML. Yet this is what I added to Google”

    As generated by RankMath.

Yet this is what I get from Google.

“Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.” ~ Google

To make matters worse, the sitemap URL redirects to the homepage or 404 error (if I disable Redirections).

NOTE: I’ve cleared my cache, browser cache, tried it on a different computer, and even updated my permalinks by hitting save on both Permalinks and Rankmath under sitemap.

Please help and thanks in advance!

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

We really look forward to helping you.

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

I have seen you are using Cloudflare, could you temporarily turn it off so we can debug the site without the Cloudflare cache affecting it?

    Looking forward to help you.

    Hello, any update?

The Sitemap was not working on your site because the Links per Sitemap option in the Dashboard >> Rank Math >> Sitemap settings was set to 0. I changed it to 200 and updated the Settings. That fixed the issue.

    Can you please confirm?

    Thank you.

That was so helpful. Can I activate both the cache plugin and Cloudflare?

Yes, if you keep the caching exceptions set, you can enable both systems and you should have issues. But if you have, just let us know and we will help you.

By the way, we released a quick Beta update that could help you with it.

Please enable the Beta update by following this:

    beta update

If you are unable to see an update, please clear Rank Math’s transients from:
WP Dashboard > Rank Math > Status & Tools > Database Tools > Remove Rank Math Transients > Remove transients
    remove transients rank math

Please clear the caches, server, and WordPress after updating.

If the issue is still not resolved, please let us know.

We are here to assist. Thank you.
