Sitemap not created

    Dear Rank Math support,

We are currently facing an issue with the sitemap generated by the Rank Math plugin. When we go to our sitemap it redirects us to the homepage of the website. This doesn’t happen all the time for some reason, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. This also is giving an error in Google Search Console saying the sitemap is HTML due to it being forwarded to the homepage.

    Things I’ve tried so far:

    – Clearing the cache of WP Rocket and Cloudflare
    – Re-saving the sitemap settings in Rank Math
    – Excluding the sitemaps from caching and clearing the caches again
    – Opening the sitemap in an Incognito-browser

Any suggestions from your side on how to fix this? I can create a WordPress-account to investigate if necessary. Please let me know if we have to do so 🙂

    Kind regards,

    Richard

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

If it’s not much to ask, we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

We really look forward to helping you.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

I changed your exclusion rule from (.*sitemap*.).xml to (.*sitemap*.) which seems to have fixed your issue. You can test your sitemap URLs here: https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html and let us know.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    Dear Michael,

I still can’t see the sitemap in my browser and also not in an incognito-browser. It forwards me to the homepage either way. The sitemap validator also says the following:

    Incorrect http header content-type: “text/html; charset=UTF-8” (expected: “application/xml”)

Can you please check further? Thanks in advance and if you need any other information please let me know!

    Dear support,

The sitemap seems to work now for the most part. For example, the sitemap_index.xml works and so does post-sitemap1.xml. But when I click post-sitemap2.xml I still get forwarded to the homepage.

    Kind regards,

    Richard

    Hello,

It seems you are also using Cloudflare as a cache. Could you temporarily disable it so we can test everything and see the changes in real-time?

Also, I have already solved the issue (all the sitemaps are shown fine) but if the issue comes back, it just means it is Cloudflare caching the sitemaps, so you would need to add some exceptions in the Cloudflare account.

    Looking forward to help you.

    Hello Alberto,

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I’ve added the following page rule in CloudFlare. Do you think it will be sufficient?

    https://smartoptions.io/*sitemap*
    Cache Level: Bypass

    Kind regards,

    Richard

    Hello,

I think it is fine, at least I checked again and it seems to be working and since it was one day ago, if Cloudflare cached it, it would show the error again.

    Looking forward to help you.

    Hi,

It indeed seems to have been resolved. 24 hours have passed since I updated the CloudFlare rules and Google also correctly reads the index and all the sitemaps in the index except for one. I’m gonna write that one off as “needs time to index”. Thanks for the excellent support.

    Kind regards,

    Richard
