sitemap is showing error 404

  • Dear sir/ma’am,
It is to inform you that I have submitted the generated sitemap of rank math. But Google shows an error that 404. Once I have checked whether the sitemap is working or not, I have opened the sitemap link from the rank math sitemap setting then it is showing 404. To fix it I have to increase or decrease the number of links (Links Per Sitemap). Generally, I have put 100000 links on “Links Per Sitemap’. Once I have changed a digit and saved it. It is working. But after a few days again the same 404 error is showing. To solve, again I have to do the same process. Therefore, I kindly request you please guide me, How to fix the 404 error permanently?
    Regards

  • Hello,

Thanks for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

If the sitemap keeps returning a 404 error from time to time, it means it is getting cached. Please follow this guide to exclude the sitemap from being cached: https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

Also, you should lower the number of the links per sitemap as Google responds better to smaller pages in sitemap: https://rankmath.com/kb/configure-sitemaps/#links-per-sitemap

Hope this helps. Let us know if you need any other assistance.

    Dear sir,
I have put 200 “Links Per Sitemap”. What is its meaning? I mean, what is the meaning of 200 “Links Per Sitemap”
    Regards

    Hello,

For example, if you have 500 posts and set the links per sitemap to 200, your sitemaps will be something like this:

    Yourdomain.com/post-sitemap1.xml = 1-200
    Yourdomain.com/post-sitemap2.xml = 201-400
    Yourdomain.com/post-sitemap3.xml = 401-500

To understand this, you should know that Google crawls small-sized sitemaps faster. With this in mind, Rank math uses the links per sitemap limit to break down sitemaps into smaller parts. You can also check Google’s guidelines for sitemaps:
    https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/sitemaps/build-sitemap

    I hope that helps.

    Thank you.

    Dear sir,
How to create multiple sitemaps using rank math.
    Regards

    Hello,

For the same post type, you do not need to create multiple sitemaps as that is automatically handled by Rank Math. If the number of links for a sitemap is exceeding the Links Per Sitemap, a new sitemap would be automatically generated.

To enable sitemaps for other post types, you can follow this guide:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/configure-sitemaps/

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you.
