Sitemap help

  • Hey Guys

I am trying to submit my sitemap with rank math.

For the past few months, I have been building my site and, therefore, have had no index on. I have now just enabled indexing for the whole website, all pages and posts.

When I look at my sitemap rank math has created, the home page is not on the site map despite indexing being enabled.

Also only 2 of my 16 posts are in the sitemap despite all of the posts being indexed.

Also, within the posts section of the site map there is a URL https://twofrequentflyers.com/travel-guides-1/

This is not actually a post, it is a page that I have permanently redirected to this URL https://twofrequentflyers.com/travel-guides/. I have also added this URL as the Canonical URL. This redirection is working as when I click on the link in the site map, it takes me to the correct URL.

The page URL https://twofrequentflyers.com/travel-guides/ is visible in the page site map, which I want to be. However, I have no idea why the original URL https://twofrequentflyers.com/travel-guides-1/ is still visible in the site map and why on earth it would be under posts as it is a redirected page. Is there a way this can be removed please?

Equally, is it possible to add my home page to the site map under pages. This is the home page URL: https://twofrequentflyers.com/

Also, only 2 of my 16 posts are showing in the posts site map, all posts are indexed so is it possible to add all the other posts to the sitemap?

I have tried to sort out the errors but really unsure why this is happening. Maybe its because I have just set the site to be indexed but I am not sure.

I really want to sort it as soon as possible as I want to submit the full site map to google

Thanks so much for your help in advance

(oh also all my site map settings with rank math are set to include posts, pages and categories ect.

    BW

  • Hello Beth,

I apologize for the issues you are facing with your sitemap in Rank Math. Thank you for providing detailed information about the problems you are encountering.

Based on the issues you described, it seems like there might be some misconfigurations causing the discrepancies in your sitemap. Here are some steps you can take to address the specific concerns you raised:

    1. Missing Home Page in Sitemap:

      • If your homepage is not appearing in the sitemap despite enabling indexing, you can try resubmitting your sitemap to Google Search Console. Here is a tutorial on how to resubmit your sitemap to Google.
    2. Posts Missing from Sitemap:

      • If only 2 out of 16 posts are showing in the posts sitemap, ensure that all your posts are set to index. You can check and adjust the indexing settings for your posts in Rank Math SEO -> Titles & Meta -> Robots Meta.
    3. Redirected Page in Sitemap:

      • To remove the redirected page URL from the sitemap, you may need to check if there are any residual links or references to the old URL in your content or settings. Additionally, ensure that the canonical URL is correctly set to the new URL.
    4. Adding Home Page to Sitemap:

      • If you want to add your homepage to the sitemap under pages, you can verify that the homepage is set to index and then resubmit your sitemap to Google.
    5. Including All Posts in Sitemap:

      • To include all your posts in the sitemap, ensure that they are set to index in Rank Math SEO settings.

If after following these steps, the issues persist, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

    Best regards.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Could you please confirm if you’re using custom canonical for your homepage? If so, please remove the custom canonical from the Rank Math SEO Meta box Advanced tab and let Rank Math generate the self-referencing canonical.

Once done, please follow the steps below and see if that works for you:

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

For more details on this issue, you can check this URL: https://rankmath.com/kb/url-not-in-sitemap/

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Hey there

Thanks for your reply, I have checked with my cashe plugin NitroPack already and they said that they are not compressing rank maths site map.

I will removed the canonical url from home page and see if that helps.

To be honest I was trying to fix this for 6 hours yesterday, it’s driving me a bit insane.

I needed up making a whole new site map and adding it to the root folder of my website but I want to be able to do it with rank math.

Please would someone be able to long into the site and help because I really looked through every article and tried everything yesterday but 14 posts are still missing.

I will also contact my cashing provider again

    Thanks again for your help

    Hello,

Rank Math automatically includes the URL to the sitemap unless it is set to Noindex and has a custom canonical URL.

If your pages are set to index and have self-referencing canonical then we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.

Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.

    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Ahhhh hahaha,

I have just removed all the canonical URLs from every single post and page and now everything is showing in the site map!!! Thank goodness ahaa! Honestly, I was at this all day yesterday for such a simple reason. But I tried removing them yesterday, and it didn’t work, so very odd. Anyway, today, it’s working!

Now, in order to use the Rank Maths site map, will I have to delete the other site map I uploaded to my root folder and resubmit the Rank Maths one to the Google Search Console?

Also, do you know after I have submitted Rank Maths site map, do I need to keep resubmitting it in the future to google search console or will it update automatically?

THANKS SO MUCH for your help aha

    Okay

I have just resubmitted the sitemap from rank math to Google search console. I had already submitted rank maths previous site map without all the posts on.

Now when I submit the new sitemap, it isn’t recognizing the new pages in the sitemap. It just comes up with a notice that it has been submitted successfully and that Google will periodically look for changes.

Am I right in thinking that when Google eventually looks at/crawls Rank Maths site map, it will acknowledge and update the new pages? Just want to make sure I haven’t done anything wrong and that all the pages will be recognized?

Also, do I need to delete the other sitemap I created from mt root folder?

Currently, there are two sitemaps submitted on the Goole search console, Rank Maths and the other one I created. Does this matter? As I can’t seem to delete them from Rank Math?

    Thanks again

    Hello,

If you had the sitemap from our plugin that ends with sitemap_index.xml previously submitted you don’t need to submit it again as Google is already aware of it and will crawl it.

Depending on the crawl budget assigned to your website it could take anything between a couple of hours to a couple of weeks for the sitemap crawling to happen.

If the website is fairly new it could take up to 2 weeks for the sitemap to start getting crawled consistently.

As for the one you have in the filesystem, you should remove it and rely only on a single source for the sitemap generation.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

    Thank you for your advice!

I have removed the other sitemap from the root folder of my website.

It is still visible in the Google search console, and I cannot see a way to remove it from there. But providing it is deleted from the root folder of the website, am I all good?

    Thanks again

    Hello,

Since the sitemap has been removed from the root folder, Google will stop visiting it or any URL listed in it.

To delete the sitemap from the search console:

    1. In the table on the main Sitemaps report, find and click the sitemap that you wish to delete.
    2. In the details page for the sitemap, click the more options button which is denoted by the three vertical dots
    3. Click Remove sitemap.

You can also this guide from Google: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7451001?hl=en#zippy=%2Cdelete-a-sitemap

Hope this helps and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.
