Sitemap and Ranking Issues

    Hello,

I’ve been chatting with your team and they have recommended that I provide my website logins for you to have a closer look.
Our rankings have been dropping ever since we started using Rankmath and we were going to switch to Yoast, but I thought it might be worth seeing if there are any issues you guys can see that may help us start to recover and move back up the rankings.

Some things that stand out to me are that the Homepage does not show in the sitemap and there seems to maybe be confusion/ a double up of the domain. One version of the domain has the trailing slash and one does not when I do SEMRush audits. So, it shows both websites [moved to sensitive data section] and maybe this is causing an issue?

We used to rank #1 on Google, but since we switched to Rankmath the website has stopped performing well I’m afraid.

  • Hi guys, any update on this? We’d rather just switch to Yoast if there’s a major problem with RankMath?

Hi guys, this is crazy? Can someone have a look please? If not we’ll just head over to Yoast as they say they can fix this for us.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math support. We’re sorry to hear that you’re having some issues with our plugin, we’d love to help you resolve these issues – just let us know the problem, and we’ll do our best to help resolve them for you.

    Regarding the issues you mentioned:

    1. Your homepage is actually included in your sitemap, as you can see in the screenshot we attached.

Your homepage is considered a page, so it is in the page-sitemap.xml file, which is part of your sitemap index. This is the standard way of creating sitemaps and it is the same on our own website: https://rankmath.com/page-sitemap.xml
    2. We’re not sure what you mean by this, could you please explain more clearly what you are referring to? As far as we can tell, your website is set up correctly to redirect the non-trailing slash version to the trailing slash version, except on the homepage. This is the recommended practice and it ensures that Google only indexes one version of your website. We don’t think this has anything to do with your ranking drop.
    3. We can’t say for sure why your ranking has dropped, but we can assure you that it is not because of Rank Math. Our plugin is designed to help you optimize your website for SEO, but it cannot guarantee or control how Google ranks your site. There are many factors that affect ranking, such as content quality, user experience, backlinks, competition, etc. Rank Math cannot influence these factors directly, but it can help you improve them by providing useful features and suggestions. To investigate this issue, please check your Google Search Console to see if there are any errors or warnings that might be affecting your ranking.

We hope this clarifies the situation and helps you resolve the issue. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us again. We’re always here to assist you.

Thank you for choosing Rank Math!

    Hi Guys,

Yes we’ve managed to get it back into the Sitemap. It wasn’t there when we had a Breadcrumb for the page, but since removing the RankMath Breadcrumb it seems to be back. Did you guys see anything else that was misconfigured that might be leading to our poor performance?

    Hello,

The login you shared is no longer working.

However, your robots.txt contains a disallow rule that can affect your website crawlability.

In this case, you can follow our guide here to remove the sitemap URL from your robots.txt:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/how-to-edit-robots-txt-with-rank-math/

Our default and recommended rules are mentioned in this section.

Moreover, if there are any issues reported on your URLs that prevent them from being indexed, you can see them in the coverage section report of your GSC:
    https://support.artlogic.net/hc/en-gb/articles/360016851260-Google-Search-Console-errors-and-coverage-issues

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.

    Hi Reinelle,

My apologies, I hadn’t heard back from RankMath for a few days so assumed I wasn’t going to get any help and changed the password. I’ve re-activated it now so you can login with those logins:
    [moved to sensitive data section]

I have updated the Robots.txt to the following. Is this correct?

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-admin/
    Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
    Sitemap: https://cleosonnile.com.au/sitemap_index.xml

Please feel free to change anything else you think might help as we’re desperate to recover our rankings.

    Thank you,

    James

    Hello,

Apologies for the delay as this ticket seems to have been stuck in our drafts section for some reason.

The logins for your website are already working. Also, your robots.txt already contains the default/recommended rules so search engines can index your website freely.

In this case, you may monitor your website performance in your Google Search Console after giving Google some time to recrawl your site.

You can also monitor the coverage section as advised above to see if there are any issues reported on your URLS.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.

Woops sorry those are the wrong logins, please see actual logins in Sensitive Info…

Please Note: We don’t care which version of the site is canonical (https://cleosonnile.com.au or https://cleosonnile.com.au/) as long as there is only one version so the search bots stop getting confused.

Hi guys, unfortunately our rankings are still really poor.[moved to sensitive data section]

    Hello,

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience.

Please check for URLs in your Google Search Console and look for any coverage issues that may tell us why your website is not ranking well on the SERP. You may refer to this guide: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7440203?hl=en

We really look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you.

Hi Jeremy, that response does not help in the slightest.
There are two versions of the Homepage being shown (https://cleosonnile.com.au/ and https://cleosonnile.com.au) and Google say it is probably because RankMath and something else on the website are canonicalising different versions (one is canonicalising https://cleosonnile.com.au/ and the other is canonicalizing https://cleosonnile.com.au).

Can somebody from RankMath please log into the website and figure out what is going on?

    Hello,

    We apologize for that.

We already checked your website before and we see no issues with the configuration that will cause any ranking issues. The only thing to focus on now is the quality of the content and how it helps the search intent.

If you see major ranking issues on your website even though the on-page SEO is established, you should conduct an audit following this guide: https://rankmath.com/blog/seo-audit/

Your homepage is already showing the correct Canonical URL as you can see in this screenshot here:

    Rank Math support

The canonical tag is only shown once so Semrush must have crawled a cached version of your homepage. Can you please share a screenshot from Google saying that our plugin is causing the canonical issue?

Since your website is already configured correctly, it goes down to the issues in Google Search Console coverage reports so we can determine them in detail and make proper adjustments.

Looking forward to helping you with this one.

    Hello,

Since we did not hear back from you for 15 days, we are assuming that you found the solution. We are closing this support ticket.

If you still need assistance or any other help, please feel free to open a new support ticket, and we will be more than happy to assist.

    Thank you.
