Remove category base. randomly stops working

    First, thank you for your amazing job with this plugin.

    Now, my issue is that sometimes the Remove category base option stop working which result in all product categories return 404. This has happened multiple times to two of my clients for the last 6 months. My clients are on different servers but run similar stack with Nginx (no apache). My clients only have the role shop_manager and have no access to settings. I’m the only administrator and since this always happen when I’m not doing any work on the sites it seems to not be related to core or plugin updates or maintenance.

    At first I thought it was related to Redis Object Cache or Redis Page Cache, but the issue keeps appearing even with all types of cache disabled.

    The issue is easily fixed temporarily by going to Rank Math > General Settings > WooCommerce and just click Save Changes. The Remove base and Remove category base options are already On but just not working properly. Unfortunately I haven’t had time to investigate any deeper since it’s always the client who find the issue first.

    Does anyone have any suggestion of what might be the cause of this?

    Thanks a lot for your query and we are so sorry about the trouble this must have caused.

    It could be that your permalinks settings aren’t staying saved and require flushing permalinks.

    At this time, there are two solutions I can offer you.

    1. Flush rewrite rules when something changes on your website. Here are plenty of examples you can use in your particular use-case scenario.

    2. You can disable the remove category base option in Rank Math and try using some other plugin. You will likely see the issue in that as well but at least you will rule out if the issue is really due to Rank Math or your server setup.

    2. I have not had this issue with any other plugin that remove the category base. I normally one of three plugins for this:

    • One I made myself
    • Permalink Manager for WooCommerce
    • RankMath

    Out of all WooCommerce sites I manage there are 10 sites I’ve removed the category base on, but only 2 have had these issues and it’s these 2 I used RankMath to remove category base on.

    The Remove Category Base feature in RankMath is what made me switch from SEO Framework in the first place.
