Redirection issues causing infinite loops

Was running v1.0.25.1 and got an alert from Google Search Console that there was a redirect issue. Checked it out and there was a redirect that was causing an infinite loop.

Going into the “edit” portion of that particular redirect it had two redirects, first one was fine, but the second was pointing the redirect to itself (redirect to destination url).

Upon checking the other redirections I found several others with similar issues; I have included the .htaccess output in the “Sensitive Data” section.

So I would assume there is some type of bug that happens when you start editing the permalinks multiple times? …shouldn’t there at least be some form of error checking that doesn’t allow redirecting to itself to avoid infinite loop situations?

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

No the plugin does not check whether the redirect already exists to prevent a redirect loop but this is a great idea that I would be happy to submit to our dev team.
At the moment, I can suggest that you manually delete the links that are redirecting to the source page to fix this.

I hope this info helps. Thank you.

    Hi Michael,

Yep, I have fixed them all up, just don’t want it to keep happening 🙂
