recurring sitemap 404 issue

Hello, Google search console indicated an error fetching my sitemap.

I checked my sitemap URL and noticed a 404. So I followed the directions in your KB (Settings > Permalinks and hit the “Save Changes” button).

This fixed the issue, but the sitemap 404 appears to be a recurring issue. It happens every few weeks. I would like to fix this so it doesn’t keep happening.

The caching plugins on my site are disabled and have been for a few months. But the site is connected to cloudflare.

Can you please help or advice? I have included WP admin access below.

  • Hello,

Thank you for getting in touch with us.

    The sitemaps are working fine.

When you see the issue next time, please ping us without making changes so we can check.

    Ok, I will.
    Thanks for your response.

    Hello,

We are always glad to assist.

Your sitemap seems to be still cached by cloudfare. Please ensure to add the sitemap exclusion rule (*sitemap*) and clear your cache.

If you have any further question(s), please let us know. Thank you.

    Hi Michael,

    Thanks for the additional input.

I’ve set up this exclusion rule on cloudflare: https://tinyurl.com/yxeyjzsw
Does that look correct to you?

Also, I have WP Rocket plugin on my site. I am using it alongside cloudflare. WP Rocket is deactivated now, but I plan to activated it later.

Do I need to add/modify any settings inside WP Rocket to ensure I do not experience sitemap issues?

    Hello,

Yes, that Cloudflare exception is fine (just make sure the non-www version redirects to that version too).

About WP Rocket, you should add the following cache exceptions:

    /(.*)sitemap(.*).xml
    /(.*)sitemap.xsl

    Looking forward to help you.

    Hello Alberto,

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, the non-www version of the site redirects to the www version. Thanks for pointing this out.

I have added the cache exceptions to WP Rocker.

I will be in touch if the sitemap 404 issue happens again but hopefully the changes I’ve implemented has fixed the issue.

Thanks again to all of your support team.

    Hello,

With your URLs excluded from cache, everything should be working fine.

If you have any further question(s), please let us know. Thank you.
