When should I delete my old posts (and what should be the deletion method? Should I delete the click the delete button or use 410 code?) If I redirect my blog posts (through 301 redirects) through rank math.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention.

I’m not quite sure whether I fully understand your question. But I’ll do my best, and please let me know if I misunderstood.

To delete the source page or not is completely optional. If you have already set a redirect to those pages using 410, then it is safe to delete the page/post.

Its purpose is to let Google or visitors know that the page is already deleted, and not missing (404 error page not found) on your site.

You can redirect an existing page or even a deleted page with this to a different site or same site, all the same.

Here’s an article that can be helpful:
    https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/beginners-guide-to-creating-redirects-in-wordpress/

    I hope that helps.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

I am explaining my question properly:

1)I want to redirect 26 to 30 irrelevant blog posts through 301 so which action should I do first (Should I deindex or delete my old posts then redirect or redirect my old posts on new URL then deindex or delete my old posts? And Is it necessary to deindex or delete old posts?). And what should be the deindexing or deleting method of old posts, should I simply press the delete button from WordPress for deleting the old posts or remove the URLs from the Google search console or use 410 code for deleting, or all three methods should I follow? And after how many days should delete or deindex the old blog posts (in case you recommend deleting the old posts after 301 redirections?)

2)Will I need to resubmit my sitemap in the google search console after 301 redirections? Or remove the 301 code manually from the sitemap or both?

3)What manual actions should I take after 301 redirections?

4)Will it be any canonical issue in this 301 redirection in my case?

5)Will my website slow after 301 redirections through the plugin? If I do this 301 redirection through .htaccess, will my website perform better?

6)Should I do redirection through the “Redirection tab” or redirect individual posts (where the redirection option in each post). Is there any difference between these two methods?

7)I read somewhere If I do redirection through a plugin, redirection exists in the database. I occasionally optimize or clear my database (unnecessary database files) through the wp rocket plugin, will I not able to optimize my database after 301 redirections?

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.

Do not delete the content right away and set 410 the redirections. I’d suggest you do with the Google Search Console (https://search.google.com/u/2/search-console/removals) to remove your URLs from SERPs. If you want to delete the posts eventually, however, if you don’t want to delete them, you can do the same thing I said earlier and set “noindex” tag on the specific posts.

You should only delete your old posts if they are irrelevant to users, leading to a bad experience.

Will I need to resubmit my sitemap in the google search console after 301 redirections? Or remove the 301 code manually from the sitemap or both?

You don’t have to resubmit the sitemap because google will take care of the links inside SERPs, and then later, you can delete the post from your website. Rank Math will update the sitemap it usually does.

Will it be any canonical issue in this 301 redirection in my case?

If you canonicalize a page to a different page, you tell search engines that it’s a duplicate, and therefore less worthy of indexing.

Will my website slow after 301 redirections through the plugin? If I do this 301 redirection through .htaccess, will my website perform better?

Your website will not slow down at all. Rank Math will eventually make all the rules inside .htaccess files virtually.

Should I do redirection through the “Redirection tab” or redirect individual posts (where the redirection option in each post). Is there any difference between these two methods?

It would be best if you do it inside the RM Redirection Module. Either way, the same is going to happen.

I read somewhere If I do redirection through a plugin, redirection exists in the database. I occasionally optimize or clear my database (unnecessary database files) through the wp rocket plugin, will I not able to optimize my database after 301 redirections?

No, your cache plugin will not affect the Rank Math Plugin behavior. Feel free to use the Redirection module.

Hope that helps. If you have any further question(s), please let us know. Thank you.

First of all, thank you so so much Ankit for clarifying everything that I asked.

I am highly grateful to you, it is really a great help you provided me today.

Since all my posts are irrelevant so I want to delete them all after redirection. It is a great idea to set “Noindex tag” in each post and later delete the posts from the website by pressing the delete button (You explained above). I convinced and satisfied these two things.

    But

How can I remove post URLs after redirection or redirected URLs from the google web search console removal because after redirection the same URLs will be reached the new destination. So it is like I will remove the new UrLs from google search console removal. How it is possible? Please guide me if I misunderstood something.

Thank you very much for your previous help.

    Hello,

As I said earlier, to remove posts URLs from Google SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages), You need to use Google’s web search console removal tool. Let me sheds some light on how it works.

    > Remove all the URLs from Google through GSC.
    > Set 410 redirection inside the WordPress

I believe you wonder if any visitor clicks on those particular posts from the search results page (as you have already redirected them), Google will replace the link with the new one, and you will have to remove it again? No, we instruct Google to remove them with the redirection rule method and let Google know that we don’t have those pages and want to delete them from SERPs.

I hope that helps. Thank you.

Hello Ankit, Thanks for the reply.

    1. 410 redirect is something when you want to delete your posts instead of redirecting them to a new post. I want to redirect my old posts (On a new post by a 301 redirect) and delete those. So 410 is not for me I guess.

    2. And removing the old URLs from the removal tool after deleting the posts is not a great idea in my case. Because I will redirect old posts on the new one so there is no need to delete them from the search engines. When someone clicks on the old URLs, the user will get the new Url.

    My scenario should be:

    1. First delete the old posts then redirect them on the new Url by 301 redirection.

    2. No need to do 410 redirection.

    3. No need to do Url removals from google websearch console removal or search engine.

    Am I right?

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes, in your case, you want to redirect your old post to the new one, use 301 redirects, and you are good to go, no need to remove pages from SERPs.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance.

    Hi Ankit

    1. Will I reverse my redirects if anything bad happens to my website?

    2. For backing up all the redirects, the article suggests that export the .htacces file (if you have an Apache server), export to the Nginx config file (if you have an Nginx server). My hosting company says that they have both Apache and Nginx server. What should I do in that case?

    3. Is rank math redirections doesn’t add redirection code in the .htcaccess file? I am asking because there is an option “Sync to .htaccess” under the export tab. What is this option mean?

    4. My blog is 2.5 years old. Why I am not seeing any Url in the desktop version in Google search console (under the core web vitals, no good URL, no poor URL, nothing). I am getting the traffic from the desktop, I checked in the Google search console.

In the mobile version, there are 29 URLs.

    What could be the problem?

I am asking you the last question because I switched rank math from Yoast. Maybe the problem arose at that time. I didn’t notice this problem before and after the switch. I got it a few days ago. If you can provide me the solution to this, I would be highly grateful to you.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math again.

Will I reverse my redirects if anything bad happens to my website?

If you perform the 301 redirects you should stick with that as reversing them will only cause more confusion to Google and your visitors. This may even deteriorate the problem.

For backing up all the redirects, the article suggests that export the .htacces file (if you have an Apache server), export to the Nginx config file (if you have an Nginx server). My hosting company says that they have both Apache and Nginx server. What should I do in that case?

If your host does have both Apache and NGNIX servers you may opt to use any of them. But in this case, we recommend the .htaccess file as it is well synched in Rank Math.

Is rank math redirections doesn’t add redirection code in the .htcaccess file? I am asking because there is an option “Sync to .htaccess” under the export tab. What is this option mean?

Rank Math .htaccess file simply mirrors the .htaccess file in your root folder. You can opt to change this file’s content within the Rank Math interface under General settings but it will still create a backup of the original one within the root folder.

The synch to .htaccess feature will copy all your active redirections on the list to your .htaccess file in the root folder.

My blog is 2.5 years old. Why I am not seeing any Url in the desktop version in Google search console (under the core web vitals, no good URL, no poor URL, nothing). I am getting the traffic from the desktop, I checked in the Google search console.

If you see a “No data available” screen, it means either that your property is new in Search Console, or that there is not enough data available in the CrUX report to provide meaningful information for the chosen device type (desktop or mobile).

Also, it is possible that most of your site content is accessed through mobile compared to desktop and hence there is no enough info on your desktop version.

I highly doubt if the switch between Yoast and Rank math could have caused this. Please refer to this guide to see how and what are the basis of getting these metrics: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9205520?hl=en#

Hope this clarifies your questions. In case you need additional assistance do let us know.

We really look forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Hi Brian,

    Thanks for the reply.

    1. All my redirections have completed yesterday. I exported.htaccess file for backup of redirections.

But there is no “Sync .htaccess file” option under the export tab. How can I perform this action? And is it really necessary to “Sync the .htaccess file”?

    2. As shown in the screenshot, there are red and yellow lines in a desktop version in core web vitals. When I click on the red line, it shows 31 poor URLs on 29 march 2021 and when I click on yellow URLs, it shows 31 URLs need improvements on 1 April 2021. And as you can see in the screenshot, there are no lines or data after that. What could be the issue?

In March and April there are poor or improvement URLs and after that 0 URL?

    Hello

Thank you for getting back to us.

But there is no “Sync .htaccess file” option under the export tab. How can I perform this action? And is it really necessary to “Sync the .htaccess file”?

This should not be the case the option should be displayed within your export section. This option is only meant when you want to use these redirections in an external/another site that you have set the destination on or if you are not using the redirection list anymore. You do not have to do that if redirections are on the same site.

As for your core web vitals, we can only guide you on how to improve your web pages. These are closely related to your site’s performance and not on SEO. Please try using the performance plugins as well. Here is a guide on how to improve them: https://backlinko.com/hub/seo/core-web-vitals

    Hope this helps.
    Thank you.

    Thank you Brian.
