Can you please try checking if PHP values are not too low to handle the processes?
You can check that by going to WordPress dashboard > Tools > Site Health > Info tab > Server
If the values are low, please contact your web host and ask them to set the following values:
PHP Memory Limit: 512M
Max input time: 150
PHP time limit: 120
PHP max input variables: 1000
If that doesn’t work for you, please try enabling WP Debugger on your site, perform the action again and share the error log with us here.
Having the error log file will give a clear idea of why this might be happening.
