I have the same issue, when you submit this to Google Search Console it says that there is an error and that it´s HTML…. ref Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.
Mine is also working…https://www.ervik.as/sitemap_index.xml, but it gives an error on google… what to do?
I opened the Google Search Console today. I got a report on one of the sitemap errors. I use the default RM sitemap. As in the picture that I included. Please help RM master.

Looks like you are serving a cached version of the sitemap to Google.
1. Please delete the sitemaps from the Google Search Console.
2. Clear your website cache and add sitemap_index.xml and *-sitemap.xml (this might be different for W3 Total Cache plugin) to the exclusion list in your Cache plugin.
3. Add sitemap_index.xml file again to your Google Search Console.
That should do the trick.

Not been resolved. I am not find the exclusion list in My Cache plugin. I am using WP super Cache.
I have the same problem, with my https://www.essesjoias.com/product-sitemap.xml it show on GCS 1 error. i already cached all my site i removed my sitemap from GCS and nothing. it show the same error.
