    Hello, I have another ticket that’s getting flooded with spam comments, so you guys aren’t actually responding to me — please review that ticket if need be: #209470

    Original Request:
    We have turned on the Open External Links in a New Tab/Window under Rank Math > General Settings > Links.

    This has been on since our site’s inception. (Nov 2020)

    Unfortunately, when you click an external link throughout our site, it opens in the same window and NOT in a new window. Is there a way to:
    A) retroactively fix this
    B) fix it for all future pages/posts

    Updates From the Comments:
    You said the logins provided didn’t work — but I just copy and pasted from sensitive data and successfully logged in with both logins provided.

    You suggested a filter was on the site — our developer checked and a filter is NOT on the site.

    You said you struggled to find the wp-content folder — I shared a screenshot of the folder existing in the default location.

    You asked if we were working on a custom installation and our developer confirmed we are NOT running on a custom instance.

    This means that the logins provided work, our WP is in a default install with the folders in the default location, and no filters are blocking rankmath plugin features, but external links continue to open in the same tab despite the “open external links in a new tab” feature being turned on.

    Can you please help me understand why the tool is not working as advertised on our account?

    Hello,

    Thanks for contacting us. Sorry for the delay and any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

    I was able to check that you are using custom fields to insert the content in your posts and pages. The Open External Links in New Tab option only works on the links that are in the actual content and not part of the ACF fields.

    I created a test post without custom fields and the option is working fine for the external link in that post. You can check the same in the RM Test post. It’s in the trash folder.

    So in order to apply this option to the external links you will need to add the links in your main content and not in the ACF fields.

    Hello,

    Our devs have figured out a workaround for this and they have added a code snippet to your site using the Code Snippets plugin. Now all the external links are opening in a new tab.

    Steps followed:

    1) Installed code snippets plugin for adding extra code – https://tinyurl.com/yet2nzhl
    2) Added Javascript code – https://tinyurl.com/yh4qngy5

    Or if you want to avoid installing the additional plugin you can easily add the same Javascript code at the end of your footer.php(https://tinyurl.com/yfvxnj7t) file inside your theme folder.

    Thank you SO MUCH for giving me an answer I can use!

    Will this be retroactive? Or will all of my current links in ACFs need to be manually switched to open in a new tab?

    All the external links on your entire website should now be opening in a new tab correctly.
