Missing alt tags

None of the help, including https://rankmath.com/kb/image-seo/ makes clear to me how %filename% is processed. Are separators removed? The example Sunrise at Maldives does nothing for me.

Could someone explain how %filename% is processed? IOW, how to actually structure the filenames?

And, maybe a little more detail on the screen?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting the support, and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

The %filename% variable simply retrieves the image’s file name and you can use it to populate your image’s alt tag attribute.

By default, the Alt attribute format is set to %filename% and if you wish to add a separator, you can simply add this variable %sep%. Here’s an example of how I create the structure of my Alt attribute format on my end: https://i.rankmath.com/fKiK3p

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

OK, Thanks. So, last thing, that means that you have spaces in your filenames? I didn’t know that was legal on Linux based systems or WordPress.

    Hello,

    Thank you for the follow-up.

Yes, you can upload the image with spaces in the file name. Though WordPress automatically adds a hyphen (-) sign for the spaces, the ALT attribute will still show spaces in the source code.

Here’s a screencast for your reference (Though I’m using Windows) :

Using spaces is not recommended using Linux, but you can still use spaces for your filename. Here’s a link I’ve found that might be helpful:

    I hope that helps.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

Ah, Thanks…that was the information I was missing, that the dashes will be rendered as spaces. Case closed. Thanks.
