Thanks for your response. Unfortunately as stated earlier, I deactivated all plugins and and switched the theme. This problem only occurs with Rank Math activated on my site. I can not narrow this down further. There is nothing left to turn off. Please help.

My web host confirms, the same behavior observed on their end on another server as well as on localhost, not on the hosting environment. It is almost certainly not a conflict with another plugin or theme.

Can you please check if you have enabled the redirect attachments options at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > General Settings > Media?
If so, can you please check if it works after disabling the option?

Ok, after going through the setup process for the plugin and choosing advanced instead of simple I was able to find it. Changing the setting fixed it.
