Index tag archive pages or not?

I have followed Rank Math’s suggestion to make Google do not indexing my wordpress tag achieve pages which already been indexed. And I found my ranking position decreases suddenly these days. Maybe it’s related with the decrease of the indexed page numbers. (from 1200 to 200) Should I keep a look for the ranking position or just allow Google to index my tag archive pages? Thank you.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

This is quite unexpected, including the tag pages has been known to dilute the quality of your content and thus there might be other factors that may be playing a part in this. Would you mind sharing a link to your site on the sensitive data section so that we can advise further?

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the follow up.

I have checked your Titles and Meta setting but it looks like the tag archives are still indexed and added to your sitemap.
Please note that fluctuations are completely normal. I have checked your search console data and it shows that the total clicks, impressions and position for your keywords has been going up in the last few weeks but your overall search position has taken a little hit.
I do not think that this should cause any worry, please watch this data in the next few weeks and check if there will be an improvement since the results are never instant.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

The first time I add the noindex to tag archive and remove sitemap of tag archive were at June 7. And I removed the noindex setting and added the tag archives back to the sitemap at June 12, because google informed me that there are some noindex pages being detected at June 11. So the tag archives are still indexed and added to your sitemap as you see. However, the average position decreased from 22 to 36 during June 11-22. Therefore I suspect this is causing by the tag archive.

Here are the screenshot of “Submitted and indexed” and “Indexed, not submitted in sitemap” report from google console as your reference.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the follow up.

The testing period was too short but if this is having a huge impact on your site, please keep the tag indexing options enabled for your site.

    I hope this info helps.
