The 0 Index is obviously incorrect because more than 1000 pages from your website are indexed by Google:
The new Search Console has been wonky and likes to throw these false positives around. Don’t worry about this.

In the end, the problem was due to a lot of 404 errors. The sitemap was not added or changed because of this, the assumption about the plugin was wrong.
