How long to keep redirections?

#34997
  • Hi. I have lots of redirections from the past. Most have zero hits on them. Should I delete those?
I am referring to -mostly- internal redirections (old urls that point to new ones and deleted pages with either a 410 or 301).
Is there any instruction on when it is safe to delete old redirections?
    Thank you.
    Chris.

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

It varies but you should ideally keep the 301 redirections enabled for 6 months or until you are getting 0 hits on it – whichever comes later.

I was thinking about that too. Thanks.
After that is there any point in keeping them? I mean it has no value or is an issue when google sees redirections stated in htaccess?

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

I don’t think that Google has access to your .htaccess file and thus it is unable to read the contents. The robots.txt file is the one that is accessible by search engine bots.

I can suggest that you delete them if they are no longer receiving hits after 6 months.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.
