Imagine there’s a link to a product page at yoursite.com/garmin-nstinct-tactical-edition-rugged-gps-smart-watch that is indexed by Google and receiving traffic from the SERP. Now, when reoptimizing for SEO, the link to the product page has been changed to yoursite.com/smart-watch and redirected the old one to new URL. How can I replace the new link in place of the old link in Google’s database using Google Search Console?

  • Hello,

Thank you for your query and we are so sorry about the trouble this must have caused.

You cannot force Google to de-index a particular page and replace it with the new URL while keeping the same exact position on SERPs.

To make sure that you are signaling to Google that the page should be deleted you can keep the redirection that you have or set the old page to return a 404 error.

In this case, to try and keep the rankings on SERPs as unchanged as possible the best possibility would be to keep the 301 redirect.

Now it’s just a matter of waiting for Google to start de-indexing the page with time.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.
