GSC: can't save updates – get a 501 error

I needed to change the website that google search console is tracking. I deauthorised and then authorised with new verification code, chose the relevant website from the drop down list and went to save the update. (I want to track the non-www version of my website)
I got a 501 error – not implemented. And it hasn’t updated as it’s still tracking the wrong site.
I have no other issues with updating anything else.
I’m not tech savvy, how do i fix this?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Can you confirm that you added a new property with the correct URL? If so, please check whether using a different verification method such as the DNS method will work for you.

Let me know how this goes. Thank you.

Yes have the correct URL on GSC. Rank Math will not track the non-www version which is the set preference in gsc. I will try a different method and get back to you.

Interestingly, I have exactly the same problem and have been unable to save any data from the WEBMASTER TOOLS and SEARCH CONSOLE tabs. I get:

    501
    Not Implemented
The requested method is not implemented by the server.

    Hello Dean,

    Sorry about that.

Can you please get in touch with your web hosting provider and ask them to help you with this?

All 5xx errors come from your server misconfiguration so your web host is the best person to contact in this matter.

Do let us know what they say.

    Thanks Todd,
would you know what method is being used by those particular pages. It looks like they’re passing control to admin-post.php which then results in a 501.

Interestingly, this actually only happens when clicking on SAVE CHANGES within GENERAL SETTINGS. Clicking SAVE CHANGES within SITEMAP SETTINGS, SEO TITLES + META, TITLE META etc works just fine. It’s somehow limited to just that config area.

    Hi Dean,

    Thanks for the response.

Please take a look in your server logs to find out the method that us causing issues on your end. You can get in touch with your host to help in this.

Thanks for chiming in Michael – appreciated. I’ve been in touch with my host and he grabbed the error record from the server logs from when I get the 501. It reads as follows:

    [my url]:[my IP] – – [16/May/2019:09:06:11 +1000] “POST /wp-admin/admin-post.php HTTP/1.1” 501 627 “http://[my URL]/wp-admin/admin.php?page=rank-math-options-general” “Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/73.0.3683.86 Safari/537.36”

It’s a fairly generic error message unfortunately. They suggested that it could be caused by a PHP module that needs to be enabled.

I’ve read through the Rank Math Plugin Requirements page and can’t see anything obvious that would be a problem from my install. Just thought I’d pass this back to you in case anything leaps off the page.

I checked with my hosting company and they found that “Mod_Security” on the server was being triggered so they have whitelisted the rule which was denying my website.
All appears to be working again.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

    Deb,
thanks for getting back to this ticket with your solution. You’ve saved my bacon lol. I mentioned your solution to my host and they managed to implement the same fix with success. In fact, it actually fixed a couple of other problems that I found with other plugins at the same time. Thanks again!
