Did you clear your website’s cache before attempting to verify?
Sometimes, the tags are added for you but Google sees an old cached version.
So, it is a good idea to clear then cache and then try again.
If not, check your website’s source code and make sure the HTML tag is present.

Turns out because I was using a “maintenance mode” plugin, Google was presumably unable to read the relevant HTML meta data to verify my ownership. Briefly disabling the plugin and verifying did the trick.

Sorry to revive a thread (sort of), but I wanted anyone else Googling to know that if you’re using the SeedProd coming soon/maintenance plugin it definitely has to be disabled, as this was my issue too. So glad I found this, that took ages haha.
