Yes you should add both sitemap URLs in your robots.txt since they are generated separately. You should also submit them both to your GSC.
As for the conflict notification, could you please share some screenshot? if it is a notification from Rank math, it is expected since you are using another sitemap plugin while Rank math sitemap module is still on.
The method suggested in the ticket your referred from can work if you are keen at all details. If you are not certain and you still wish to have the news sitemap, we recommend that you use a third-party sitemap plugin to handle all your sitemaps and disable the sitemap module in Rank math dashboard. This is the safer way to avoid conflicts

About conflict notification I cannot attach screenshot because I never see it anymore but it was a Rank Math notification and yep, it’s about I’m using another sitemap plugin while Rank math sitemap module is still on.

The issues it could create are problems Google getting the right content to index. That is why you got that alert message. Anyway, luckily, really soon we will publish an update with the News sitemap, so it shouldn’t be an issue anymore.
