Focus Keyword does not appear in the SEO title

We are coming from Yoast, just made the switch. RankMath gives us dramatically worse scores than Yoast, which confuses me. For example:

Page Title: Google’s Pixel phones will receive feature drops
    Focus keyword: Pixel Feature Drop

Yoast was fine with this and gave us a good score on that. RankMath complains that the focus keyword does not appear in the title. It clearly does, though. I’ve read your other tickets on this topic and you said that RankMath wants to see the exact copy of the focus keyword, not a variation like in the example above. So whom should I believe here? Yoast or RankMath?

On a side-note: RankMath claims that we have a number in the title. Maybe I have to wipe my glasses, but I am not seeing a number in that title.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

You are right, at the moment Rank Math only checks for the presence of an exact match of the keyword on the title. We are making improvements to our content analysis API and you can expect an update to address this in future.
Please note that the page score does not affect your SEO, this is just a reference point to indicate areas you need to improve for best results. This means that since you already have a variation of the keyword appearing on the title then this will improve the on page SEO.
The second issue might be a glitch or as result of a character encoding issue making the API falsely detect a number. Can you reproduce this on other posts or just the one in question?

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    Hi Michael,

thanks. Good to hear you will be making improvements on that front. We have returned to Yoast for now, but I will definitely keep you guys on my radar.

As for the issue with the number in the title, as far as I remember, this popped up on multiple posts. Maybe worth looking into on your end.

    Regards,
    Sascha

    Hi Sascha,

We are sad to see you go. If it is not too much to ask, could you please grant us access to your staging/development site so that we can investigate the second issue?

    Thank you.

Hi Michael, you won’t be able to investigate much there as the RankMath plugin has been uninstalled already. I will definitely revisit the plugin at a later day and should the issue resurface when we do, I’ll be in touch.

    Thanks
    Sascha
