External redirects go to wp-admin

  • Resolved Steve

We’ve noticed that external redirects all point to /wp-admin/. Previously we were using the Redirections plugin, but on a recent change we migrated to rank math. It copied the redirects across and internal redirects work fine, but external ones don’t. We’re hosted on wordpress.com.

If I’m logged into wordpress, the redirects work fine. Because of this the debugger always shows the redirects working. If I try a link in a different browser or curl without logging in, external redirects go to /wp-admin/. This is the same for all external – ie other site – redirects.

I’ve followed the guide at https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/ and there were no conflicts, the health check said everything was fine. I’ve had to re-enable the redirections plugin as well as rank math which is obviously an issue for us. We’d like to fix this and stick with Rank Math rather than going back to Jetpack and the Redirections plugin.

I’ve had a look through the forum and disabled the redirect attachments option under General Settings -> Links and tried again, but no success. I’ve disabled redirects to make sure there isn’t existing media at that location and it 404s. The redirections plugin definitely works fine, it’s just something in Rank Math.

Do you have any other ideas of what to check? I can provide further info or access via wordpress.com if needed.

  • I have exactely the same probleme

According to my logs Rank Math updated to 1.0.48 on September 25th at 22:40. Given there are so many recent posts about this, I wonder if it’s related to the new release?

1.0.48 Yes, all external redirections are ending up being redirected to /wp-admin/

This is a new issue with this version. It breaks a LOT on my site. Help!

For anyone else who’s worried sick about their ecommerce sites, this is what I’m doing until Rank Math have a solution:

    1. Leave auto-update on for Rank Math. If this is a plugin issue I want to get the fix when it’s ready.
    2. Checked backups from before the update. Back up my site before making changes.
    3. Install the redirection plugin and migrate external links there.
    4. Deactivate external links in Rank Math My internal redirects are still fine.
    5. Test each redirect using curl -I to make sure the location is correctly set and that the redirect is provided by redirection.

This works for me and I’m hosted on wordpress.com. No guarantees it’ll work for you, but hopefully gives you an idea. I’m sure the Rank Math guys are working on it and will roll out a fix as soon as one is ready.

I have tested to downgrade, but dont work

For information I have creat an export to htaccess and I have corret all borkens rules

mission “)” or “\” for regex or escape “-”

    For the moment its ok

A,d I have disable the auto update 😉

How did you migrate them? Manually?

This bug is severely costing me money.

Redirections plugin can import RankMath redirects. However! At least the Regex ones I had in Rankmath did not work out of the box with Redirections. The others did. I had to go through and manually change those. But the Good News is that I am back up and running and not losing money…

(Yes, you need to go to Rankmath dashboard and turn off redirections and 404 I believe if you use Redirections. Ignore the message at the top to turn off the other SEO plugin because that will just disable Redirections)

I tried the Redirection fix, but it’s STILL not working for me. I just migrated posts to a new business site, and now all I’m getting is 404 errors. VERY annoying. I hope there’s a fix soon.

same issue here and during a HUGE event where I am trying to use my links. Watching this thread and praying a fix comes soon

I am sorry for your issues, we have released a new version ( that should fix those issues. Could you update and let us know if that solved the issue?

    Looking forward to help you.
