Edit robots.txt

    Rank Math free

    Hi there,

I recently used Yoast Plugin on my website. Then I deactivated and deleted Yoast and installed Rankmath.
Nevertheless, the robots.txt is still generated with Yoast (although I have deleted the plugin and deletec cache) and I can not change it, because it is located in the root.

    My two questions:

    1. The robots.txt which is generated with Yoast, looks good and there`s no need to change it. So, is it a problem, that I use Rankmath now (Sitemap is generated with Rankmath), but the robots.txt is still generated with Yoast?

    2. If question 1 is a problem: What shall I do to fix it?

Thanks a lot and best regards
    Yvonne

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to this issue.

    1. Having your robots.txt file generated by a different SEO plugin, such as Yoast, is not a problem when you switch to Rank Math. Rank Math will still work perfectly and generate its own sitemap as expected.

Robots.txt and sitemap are independent of each other. The important thing is that your robots.txt file is properly configured, and it doesn’t conflict with Rank Math settings or block any essential content.

Since you mentioned that the robots.txt generated by Yoast looks good and there’s no need to change it, you can continue using it.

Rank Math generates the robots.txt file dynamically without using a static file which offers the advantage of being highly customisable and the ability to edit its details from Rank Math’s settings.

    2. If you decide you want to create a new robots.txt with Rank Math instead of using the Yoast-generated one. You will have to locate the static robots.txt file located in the root directory of your site and delete it. Some hosting providers may be able to help you do this.
To do it yourself you have to access your root directory using either FTP or Filemanager in CPanel. You can follow the steps in this article to access your root directory using Filemanager in Cpanel: https://www.greengeeks.com/support/article/how-to-delete-a-file-using-the-cpanel-file-manager/

You can use the Search box in the File Manager to search for robots.txt and then delete it.

We hope this helps. Please let us know if you have further questions or concerns.

    Thank you.
