Duplicate, submitted URL not selected as canonical in Google search console

    Hi,
I have around 32 URLs that google have excluded with “Duplicate, submitted URL not selected as canonical” error.
I am not sure what’s happening. The content is nowhere close to duplicate. And the “Google-selected canonical”
is the same for all the URLs. They all are pointing to the same 1 url.

I had seen this issue couple of weeks ago and to fix that added 301 redirect code (from www to non-www url) to htaccess.

Also, I had added rel canonical for the ‘Google-selected canonical’ URL, which was different at that time.

I thought this would resolve the issue. But looks like it didn’t.

Now whatever I publish, it goes in the excluded URL with “Duplicate, submitted URL not selected as canonical” error.

    Can anyone help?

Let me know if you need any detail.

    Thanks,
    Sunil

    Hi Sunil,

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

We will need to see a few examples of such URLs so we can check from our end and offer a solution.

You should check if these URLs you are talking about are AMPs. If not, check the advanced tab to see if you have changed the canonical.

If not, you should check if the actual URL and the canonical have some sort of variation – HTTP or https, trailing slash or not.

    Let us know.

    Thank you.

I have tried the following to tackle the situation :
    1. 301 Redirect from www,http to https://sitename.com (Which I had done already )
    2. Marked AMP urls as no-index, and did 301 redirect to AMP URLs. (Which was previously crawled)
    Followed this article : https://www.gulshankumar.net/remove-amp/
    3. Blocked UTM,RSS, etc parameters, which was showing in google search console.

The last thing I have on the list is adding rel-canonical on homepage, which is not present at the moment. Is there way I can do it using rank math?

    Do you suggest anything else?

    Hi Sunil,

The canonical URL is already present on the homepage:

There is absolutely nothing to be worried about.

Thanks, todd.I hope everything will be alright now.
    I will wait and see.

    Hi Sunil,

    Thanks for the reply.

I am confident that this will fix it 🙂

Please let me know if we can help with any other issue.

    Thank you.

I had the same problem when I changed the URL into a new one. It took just 3 days to resolve the issue. The procedure is simple:

    1. Updated the internal links towards new URL.

    2. Indexed every page (through GSC) where I have changed the internal outgoing links.

I have documented the procedure here if you are interested to read: https://www.bizcope.com/duplicate-submitted-url-not-selected-as-canonical/
