Duplicate, submitted URL not selected as canonical

I am trying to submit a custom post type for my recipes for indexing on Google Search Console, the post/page that Google has chosen as the canonical page is incorrect could this be because I have recently created my custom post type or is it not picking up my custom post type?

Could there be an issue inside my wordpress settings or Rankmath settings?

Also these pages that Google are indexing are thin content pages with no content, so if this keeps persisting is it possible to noindex these pages entirely or separately?

    Hello,

After checking it, I would really recommend you set them as no-index since as you said they are thin content and will probably get you penalized for that.

You can easily set all the Recipe Type pages as no-index as I show you in the following screencast: https://i.rankmath.com/IBK2Kc

    Looking forward to help you.

    Hello,

    So when i mentioned this:
‘Also these pages that Google are indexing are thin content pages with no content, so if this keeps persisting is it possible to noindex these pages entirely or separately?’

I was referring to the incorrect pages that Google was indexing that had no content on the page at all rather than the actual /recipes pages

I was wondering whether it was possible to noindex the pages that had no content and were being index, please see the pages that are being indexed on Google Search Console in my example.

    Thanks

    Hello,

I checked your recipes post type and I couldn’t find any wish canonical issues. All your posts seem to be also added to the sitemap. Could you please ensure you have submitted only your main sitemap and without any errors reported on your GSC.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

‘You can easily set all the Recipe Type pages as no-index as I show you in the following screencast’

Will this noindex only the pages that have no content are being incorrectly noindexed?

    Hello,

Just following up, just wanted to check did you get a chance to have a look at the information i sent over about the sitemaps I have submitted and the screenshot?

Just wanted to see if my reply had updated in the system.

    Thanks

    Hello,

An important thing after seeing your screenshot: you only have to add sitemap_index.xml sitemap on Google Search Console. Any other sitemaps are found by Google when crawling the main sitemap. It should be done like that to avoid sitemap issues.

Could you try to remove them and wait a few days until Google crawls them again to check if your issue is solved?

    Looking forward to help you.

    Hello

Okay thanks, removed all other sitemaps except sitemap_index.xml

Just wanted to ask following on from your reply:

I dont want my recipe pages to be noindexed

    Thanks

    Hello,

Checking the noindex in global settings as shown in the screencast will add a noindex tag to all the posts of that type that you will create. To remove a specific page/pages from indexing, you can edit the robots meta on the individual page in Rankmath metabox under the advanced tab.

    Hello,

That helps to clear it up all now I understand. Thanks

As a rule of thumb categories and tags should be noindexed as they will be duplicate content right?

    Hello,

Well, it depends on how they are done. Maybe you have created some custom design for your categories/tags and you won’t have duplicated content/thin content but usually, it is recommended.

You can read an official answer on Google forums here: https://support.google.com/webmasters/thread/18646939?hl=en

    Looking forward to help you.

    Hello,

Thank you, yes it is a very complex one because I guess like Google have mentioned there is no right or wrong it is just dependent.

    Thanks
