Duplicate H1 and title tags

    Hi,

I am using Rank Math for quite some time and found it very useful. Today I encountered a typical issue. I got a mail from SEMRush that there are 28 pages that have same titles and H1s. So, I tried to change the single post title under the SEO Titles & Meta option. Actually by default it is %title%. I replaced it with %title% %sep% %sitename%. But, the problem was that many of my titles(posts) were having 60 characters. After using %title% %sep% %sitename% , the length of the titles exceeded 70 characters. According to the SEO rules, the length of the title should not exceed 60 characters. It is very difficult to change the titles of 1000 posts individually. Is there any problem of having the same title and H1? Will Google penalize me for it? If yes, then what is the solution? Please help me. Thank you.

    Regards

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

It is not recommended to have duplicate post titles on your site since this is bad for SEO. I can suggest that you workaround this issue by making use of another set of variables such as %title% %sep% %category%
Please note that Google will not penalize you for the same post title and H1 but it is recommended practice to make the H1 more descriptive of the page content.

I hope this info helps. Thank you.

    Hello Michael,

Thanks for your concern. But, I am sorry it didn’t help me either. When I used %title% %sep% %category% , the length of all the titles of the previous posts exceeded 60 characters. So I left it to the default, %title%. I think there is no solution for this issue. Thanks.

    Regards,
    Suresh

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

I believe you are right, the only alternative would be to manually edit the post titles and define shorter titles.

Let us know if you run into any other issues. Thank you.
