duplicate h1 and title tags

I recently ran an audit of SEMRush and was informed that over half of my pages had “duplicate H1 and Title Tags” which was creating an error issue. I am not familiar with the tech side of writing posts. But we installed RankMath because it was supposed to be very “plug and play” when it comes to following a simple process of creating a post by starting with the Title, moving into different blocks for copy and so forth.

I have written all of my posts the same way from the beginning and do not know why this error would occur. Can you please advise on what settings, if any, I need to address to ensure that this error is resolved?

We have GeneratePress as our theme and I reached out to their support who told me that this was an issue of Rankmath:

“The Theme doesn’t do anything ‘special’ with the Title Meta – as you’re using Rank Math they provide an option to update your Title Meta so you can set it to something different to the Post Title”

    Examples:

    https://calledtowander.com/aeropress-coffee-maker-review/
    https://calledtowander.com/best-free-camping-in-baja-mexico/

    Per SEMRush

    ABOUT THIS ISSUE

It is a bad idea to duplicate your title tag content in your first-level header. If your page’s <title> and <h1> tags match, the latter may appear over-optimized to search engines. Also, using the same content in titles and headers means a lost opportunity to incorporate other relevant keywords for your page.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and we regret the inconvenience caused.

The issue stated by Semrush is that the text in the H1 and title tags are the same.

The H1 tag is the main heading of your post (Post title) and the title tag is the SEO heading (or SEO title) of your post, sometimes also referred to as meta title.

Whether or not to set the Post Title and SEO title exactly the same can vary based upon the type of website that you operate.

For normal web results, you can set the SEO title identical to the Post title, avoid setting them exactly the same. If you operate a website that you wish to rank in Google News i.e, if you have a news website, then you should set the SEO title and Post title exactly the same.

You can also check this in this article:

To edit the default SEO title for posts, please head over to your WordPress admin area > Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Posts, and set the Single Post Title as per the requirement. https://i.rankmath.com/ObUUJm

You can also edit the SEO titles individually for posts by editing them. Here’s a screencast for a quick reference: https://i.rankmath.com/AmYxqn

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.

OK that is quite helpful. So what SEMRush is saying is that I should be aware of this, not necessarily that it is causing a negative impact on search engine rankings?

Our traffic is decreasing when it should be seasonally increasing so I am looking at all the errors and warnings in the SEMRush audit.

We have an information-based travel website. So would you suggest that we manually change the “Single Post Title” to something similar to the post title, since we are not a News-based website?

    Hello,

Sure, SEMRUSH is just guiding you on the best practices to follow but that would not majorly be a reason to lower your rankings.

Changing the SEO Title to be similar to the post title would be fine just ensure you include the keyword you are using to rank that post in this SEO title as well.

With Rank Math, we use the %title% for us to set the SEO title similar to the post title as it is a much easier way than manually doing so.

For your search traffic to improve it is best to devise an SEO blueprint. Here are a few resources I think you will find useful while devising an SEO strategy.
