I don’t believe there is anything you are missing. The comments are not a part of the schema in article schema: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/article#guidelines
They are only added to schema if they are added as reviews and this is only for schema types that support reviews & ratings: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/review-snippet

Currently when blogposts have comments they are not visible in the json-ld Markup by default.
Is this the expected behaviour, or am I missing something?
