Characters in title not calculating correctly

Today I was writing meta titles and descriptions for products and I noticed that the character values for the titles were not calculating correctly. For instance, I was writing a title and got to 58 characters and continued writing, but the character count went from 58 to 52 instead of 62. It seems to give false readings once it reaches 60. And at one point the character count wasn’t changing at all.

I have been doing lots of SEO the past couple of weeks and had not noticed this before, so I am guessing it is due to yesterday’s update to version Version 1.0.42.

I also wanted to add that the long paragraph notifier has gone a bit insane, too, regarding a couple of my products. I keep hitting a score of 78 and am told to make paragraphs shorter. I do one, it turns green (81), I save, and it goes back to 78. And I do this twice more and the same thing happens. I can’t do it anymore because all my paragraphs are now all one-sentence paragraphs but I am still being warned to make shorter paragraphs.

I have rolled Rank Math back to version 1.0.41 and it is working properly.

    Hi,

Thanks a lot for your query and we are so sorry about the trouble this must have caused.

We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please include your WP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

We really look forward to helping you.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

It looks like this site is running Yoast Premium. Would you like us to install Rank Math to test this issue or is it possible you gave us access to the wrong site?

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

I am SO sorry. Yes, I mixed up websites. I am working on two at once. I emailed the correct info, and I also wrote it in the Sensitive Data above. I feel rather embarrassed. Thank you again! Rita

    Hi Rita,

Thank you for the follow up.

I’ve been able to login but I cannot seem to reproduce the problem on your products and new draft products.
I suspect that this could be resulting from cached JS assets on your browser. Please test this from an incognito window and let us know if the issue is still reproduced on your end.

    Thank you.

    Hi Michael,

I was wondering, when you were on and trying to reproduce the issue, did you update to version 1.0.42? Because as I mentioned above, I had rolled Rank Math back to 1.0.41 and that solved my problems. Now I will go and update the plugin again and see if I have any issues, as well as try the same in an incognito window.

    Thanks!
    Rita

Thank you for bearing with me. I was able to replicate the issue. I have reinstalled version 1.0.42, and not only am I in an incognito window, I am using Chrome, which I haven’t used in days. My go-to browser is Brave. So I don’t think it can be a cache issue. But the meta title gets stuck at 58-59 characters. I have saved a screenshot. It should be obvious that there are many more characters than 59. Anyway, if you are willing to check for yourself, I left the title as is so if you want to see if the same thing happens to you, you can. Added the link to the product in the sensitive data section.

I am not that bothered about this now that I know I can go back to the previous version and everything will be fine, but I figured you would be interested.

    Kind regards,
    Rita

    Hi Rita,

I have shared a screencast in the sensitive data section that shows your exact meta title working find on my test install and the characters are counted correctly.

So, it would seem like a conflict with one of the plugins or the theme you are using.

To determine that, please follow this troubleshooting guide:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/

Please let me know if you find the culprit.

Only the site admin would know and your users won’t be affected by this troubleshooting.

    Looking forward to helping you.

I installed the troubleshooting plugin and currently have only Rank Math enabled. Luckily, I did still have the product page open that I used to send you the screenshot and reproduce the problem. The issue is still the same – I can type 100+ characters but the value stays at 59 out of 60. And I can’t continue to check because I stupidly decided to refresh but that was unwise because woocommerce and other things are no longer installed so I get a 404 error because I can’t get the product page.

I’m back with all the plugins on again, so I opened the product page and it’s still happening. Just out of curiosity I asked my husband to go there, and it is the same for him. There are more vague problems too, but this one is just easy to point out.

Anyway, I can’t see that it would be WordPress settings simply because the problem only started yesterday after I upgraded to the new version of Rank Math, and it stopped as soon as I reinstalled the previous version. So I am just going to go back to using 1.0.41 and hopefully I’ll be able to update to 1.0.43, if and when it comes out, without any issues.

And I just reinstalled 1.0.41 and the title field immediately jumped from the 58 that it was stuck on to 89. So whatever setup we have simply doesn’t like this update, and I hope it’s just a fluke and we can get the rest of the updates with no problem. But I really do appreciate all the time you spent trying to help. I hope you don’t feel I wasted your time.

    Kind regards,
    Rita

    HI Rita,

    Thank you for the reply.

It was not a bother, we are always happy to help 🙂 I also hope that this is a temporary fluke and it will be resolve itself.

Please let us know if this comes up in a different website and we will be more than happy to dig deeper.

    Thank you and keep safe!
