  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting the support, and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Can you please follow these steps?
    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

That should fix the issue. Please let me know if that does not. We are here to assist.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math.

I checked your main sitemap https://bumfuzzler.net/sitemap_index.xml and seems like you’re not using the Rank Math Sitemap.

Did you enable the sitemap settings in Rank Math > Dashboard > Sitemap?

    Sitemap

If the sitemap is enabled in Rank Math settings. We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.

    Sensitive Data Section

Thank you, and looking forward to your update.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

Thanks. It appears I do have it enabled. I’ve included login information in the sensitive data area.

    Hello,

Upon checking your sitemap page, it looks like you are still using another tool to generate your sitemap. Please see this screenshot:
    XML

I also noticed that the permalink structure has been updated in your sitemap.
    See example:

    <url>
    <loc>https://bumfuzzler.net/private-buffs-ranks/</loc>
    <lastmod>2020-03-10</lastmod>
    <changefreq>daily</changefreq>
    <priority>0.6</priority>
    </url>

Can you please check it on your end?

We are looking forward to helping you.

Must have originally been generated with an old SEO plugin I used, but I’m no longer using that. I only have Rank Math installed.

Yes, I actually went directly to the .xml and updated the sitemap manually so the permalinks matched while this was being sorted out.

However, I’m getting different results when I view the .xml directly and view the sitemap from the Rank Math plugin.

If I go into wordpress > rank math > sitemap settings and click on the link in ‘Your sitemap index can be found here: https://bumfuzzler.net/sitemap_index.xml&#8217; I still see the old permalink format used.

I get the impression something is cached and the next time Rath Math updates it may set it back to what it was. I’m not sure how to ensure this is working properly.

    Hello,

    Thank you for following up.

I’ve checked your root directory and found a static sitemap_index.xml file, which your old plugin may have left. I’ve already renamed that and flushed your sitemap cache, and it seems to be working fine now with Rank Math’s sitemap_index.xml.

Could you check if the missing URLs are showing now in your sitemap?

I hope that helps. Thank you, and looking forward to your update.

If I go into WordPress > rank math > sitemap settings and click on the link in – Your sitemap index can be found here: https://bumfuzzler.net/sitemap_index.xml here’s what I’m finding:

    – I see entries in the sitemap_index.xml (as per the link in Rank Math’s Sitemap configuration page) like this:

    <url>
    <loc>https://bumfuzzler.net/2018/07/02/ransack-sympathy-ladders/</loc>
    <lastmod>2020-03-10</lastmod>
    <changefreq>daily</changefreq>
    <priority>0.6</priority>
    </url>

However, if you go to https://bumfuzzler.net/2018/07/02/ransack-sympathy-ladders/ you’ll get a 404 cause I changed that permalink in WordPress.

    – Then my most recent post ‘https://bumfuzzler.net/new-year-raid-authorization/&#8217; isn’t found in the sitemap_index.xml (as per the link in Rank Math’s Sitemap configuration page)

So it seems like there are old permalinks listed, but also new links are not listed.

    – Lastly, you mentioned you renamed the root sitemap_index, but when I look in Rank Math’s Sitemap configuration page it has says ‘Your sitemap index can be found here: https://bumfuzzler.net/sitemap_index.xml&#8217; which suggests it’s looking for the sitemap_index in the root.

I’m a little confused about that.

Where is the sitemap_index.xml file found now?
Is this link in the Rank Math sitemap settings correct?

Thank you for all your effort. I appreciate it.

    Hello,

    Thank you for following up.

I’ve checked again your sitemap, and it’s showing an error 404, which was fixed by flushing your sitemap cache manually. In this case, please exclude your sitemap from being cached by following the steps in this link:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

For your other question, Rank Math generates a virtual sitemap file on your website, which will not be included in your root directory.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and looking forward to your update.

To my knowledge, I don’t have any of those caching plugins.

I’m still unsure how to verify it’s working properly. I realize you told me it was.

For instance: In this image https://www.bumfuzzler.net/rust/images/rankmathindex.jpg Why does this show an address to an index that doesn’t exist? If Rank Math is generating it virtually why does it say this is my sitemap?

Also, for tools like Google Console that ask for a sitemap, what do I get them if the sitemap Rank Math supplies is virtual?

    Hello,

    Sorry for the delay.

The default sitemap format is yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml, and it is virtually created on your website.

I’ve further investigated why your sitemap https://bumfuzzler.net/sitemap_index.xml is showing an error 404(Page not found). If you try to flush the sitemap cache manually, it is already working, but after a few minutes, the error occurs again. Here’s how you flush the sitemap cache:

1.Head over to WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks
    Hit the save button once.

    2. Go to WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > Sitemap Settings
    Hit the save button once.

In this case, you would need to exclude your sitemap from being cached by Cloudflare or from server-level caching:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/#cloudflare

You may need to contact your web host or Cloudflare for assistance excluding your sitemap from being cached.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and looking forward to your update.

I located the offending plugin, but it wasn’t something I expected. It was a security-related plugin. All is well now as far as I can tell. Thanks for your assistance.
