Canonical and Similar Woo Products

    Hi
    Hope you can help me.
Rather than use Woo product variations we have separate pages (URLS) for different colours. The product details and descriptions titles are identical but for the different colours e.g.

    TEEL VESSEL MIXER BRUSHED NICKEL
    TEEL VESSEL MIXER CHROME
    TEEL VESSEL MIXER BRUSHED BRASS

Should I for example create a canonical link to the chrome product for the colours?

    Thanks

  • Hello,

Thanks for contacting us, and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

If your product URLs have duplicate content, then I would recommend adding the canonical URL pointing to your parent product. This is basically the use of canonical URL; to tell search engines which page is the original page when a number of pages have similar/duplicate content.

Hope that helps, and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

It looks like all of your products have similar descriptions and product descriptions in them. To avoid duplication issues, you may point the canonical for other products to the parent one. Or you can change the descriptions a bit for your products and index all of them individually.

Hope that helps, and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Thank you.

If I use canonical for the moment and think if I can effectively create unique content for the colours – 2 things

1 will the other colours be removed from indexing
2 I can always revert to the individual pages once I create the content?

    Hello,

The canonical tag is used to consolidate what could be considered duplicate content, so if you have multiple pages with the same canonical, Google will only index the one that is canonical and not anything else.

This can always be reverted back to add self-referencing canonical on the pages at any time to trigger Google to crawl them and potentially index them.

You can read more about canonical and the recommendations from Google here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/consolidate-duplicate-urls

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

    Ok Thanks

So lastly with the old search console, there was a recommendations tab that highlighted duplicate content issues. That seems t have gone now so is there a way of seeing if Google is seeing my product pages that differ only by colour reference as duplicates?

    Hello,

If those are already removed from the report, then it means that Google already crawled them and considered them as fixed.

However, if there are reported URLs on your site, then you can refer to the coverage section:

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
