Google can’t fetch sitemaps, and it also says there are pages indexed with no content. This started a few days ago, the pages it refers to were ranking highly and getting plenty of traffic. Now traffic has gone through the floor.
    When I request indexing of a new post, I get this;

    Hello,

Thanks for contacting us and we regret the inconvenience caused.

Could you please share some of the affected URLs so that we can further investigate the issue?

If you’re getting the Couldn’t Fetch error for your sitemaps, then please follow these steps?
    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

    3. Clear your website’s cache and remove all the sitemaps from your Google Search Console account and submit only the main sitemap (sitemap_index.xml).

Further, give Google some time to crawl your website and update the changes.

For more details, please refer to this tutorial guide: https://rankmath.com/kb/couldnt-fetch-error-google-search-console/

Please let us know how that goes.

    Thanks.

I tried the above, but still the same result

    Hello,

Thank you for the follow-up, and apologies for the delay.

I’ve checked your sitemap, and it seems that you haven’t verified the www (or non-www) version of your website.
    www https

Please ensure that only 1 version of the sitemap is working (200 Ok status), and the rest are redirecting to it. You can also use this tool to check. Please follow the steps in this link:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/couldnt-fetch-error-google-search-console/#5-check-for-the-correct-version-of-the-sitemap

Once done, remove all the sitemaps submitted in your GSC, then resubmit your main sitemap only /sitemap_index.xml, and give Google some time to recrawl your site.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance with anything else.

Only 1 version of the sitemap is working.
There is a problem with some posts being in draft, yet GSC and screamingfrog show them as 404, yet they are visible on google.

    Hello,

Thank you for getting back to us.

Usually, draft pages will always throw a 404 error page since the page is not published yet. Just checked some of your pages here and the one on: /how-to-prevent-erosion-on-a-hill/ does not appear to be having a 404 error.

So for this, you need to wait until Google updates this issue. Else you can click on the Validate fixes tab to request fixing on the issue by Google Crawlers.

The rest of the pages does not exist on your site yet and are not visible to crawlers. Again not sure how they came to appear as they are not even on your sitemap. It does not make sense how they appear on your GSC and not your sitemap, which means they are non-existing posts.

If this is the case you may have to redirect them to another destination. If they are draft pages you need to have them published to avoid these 404s.

We are looking forward to helping you. Please keep us updated on the progress.
    Thank you.

As I mentioned, it is the bottom 2 url’s, not the one that you refer to.

    This is what I see when I click from GSC coverage issues report;

    Hello,

    Thank you for the follow-up.

This image you initially shared shows the last crawled date was April 14 & 21. Could you please confirm if you have already clicked the Validate Fix button?

Those URLs are not included in your sitemap, so validating them should let Google know that they are not included in your site.

You can also ensure that these draft pages aren’t linking to any of your live/published pages.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance with anything else.
