Usually, it is better to have enabled that redirection. Attachment pages are pages with just your images. Since it has nothing more, Google sees them as “thin content” pages so it can affect (negatively) your rankings.
So the best thing is to redirect them to the post (or posts) where their images are being used, so you avoid those issues. Don’t worry, it doesn’t affect your images, they will still be indexed by Google.
