After Rank Math serious GA problems

I swapped from Yoast / MonsterInsights to RankMath yesterday and something is definitely very wrong with GA now.

Our bounce rate and time on page has consistently been around 60% / 1m+, for many, many months.

Somehow it also captures under certain circumstances my own visits to the site (see spike in 3rd image, that’s when I was working on and after checking pages while logged in).

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

  • Okay, so for some reason the images are not working on my previous post. Lemme just put in the urls:

So it does capture clicks, but completely messes up time on page and bounce rate.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for the delay and for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

The bounce rate issue could be caused due to various reasons, where page speed nowadays is the most important issue. There could be various methods to decrease the bounce rate.

You can refer to this guide for more clarification:
    https://neilpatel.com/blog/13-ways-to-reduce-bounce-rate-and-increase-your-conversions/

You can use Rank Math’s 404 Monitor to keep an eye on your important pages to ensure they are properly reachable.

Here are some other reasons why bounce rates may increase: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/website-bounce-rate/332439/

For the third image which captures loggged in users, you can enable the toggle to exclude logged-in users in Rank Math > General Settings > Analytics, which will prevent internal traffic from showing up in your analytics.

    I hope that helps.

Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance with anything else.

    Hi Reinelle,

The bounce rate increased and time on page decreased right after swapping to Rank Math. It’s been like this for 2 days now – before both values looked much better. This 100% is the case due to the plugin switch. It must have been because there’s conflicting GA plugin code – just wondering how I can fix this.

Good ol’ Mr. Patel isn’t gonna be of much help here.

I already ticked the box of GA not tracking logged in visits. Yet it does, once I click to a page from the dashboard.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.

If for some reason, Google Analytics is still tracking you, Then there has to be cache issue, Please consider flushing your website and browser cache and do let us know how that goes so that we can troubleshoot the issue further.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

Will try, but this is not the important issue…

The important issue is that I turned on GA in RM, and it seems to conflict with MonsterInsights (which I deleted) which now messes up bounce rate etc…

Anyway, at this point I’ve turned off RM GA and reinstalled MonsterInsights. I hope that at least just restores the tracking to what it was…

Over time I’d rather not use them of course, as I’d prefer doing it all with 1 plugin.

My question is, how do I ensure RM not only installs GA, but it tracks properly as well? And it doesn’t conflict with other, old code or generates the wrong metrics?

    Hello,

Thank you for getting back to us

To make sure that Rank Math does the tracking accordingly, please make sure that you turn on the “Install analytics Code” option without having another plugin or theme tracking your site visits. This may cause a double-tracking scenario of your search analysis.

This would as well affect the bounce rate and other analytical features. Always use a single plugin when it comes to tracking your site traffic.

Hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions for us.
    Thank you.

Unfortunately it doesn’t help Brian, since I turned off MonsterInsights already before turning on Rank Math analytics.

At this point I’ve just turned off RM tracking and I switched back to MonsterInsights.

    Hello,

Am not sure how the monster insight tracks the GA traffic of a site but I noticed several instances of the tracking code on your site’s page source.

It seems to be using both the Global site tag (gtag.js) and Google Analytics UA- Tracking scripts.

Perhaps you can wait for a while to see if there is an update on the bounce rate. If you notice any please do let us know so that we can check if there is an issue on our end.

We are looking forward to helping you.

    Thanks Brian.

For now I’ll be just using MonsterInsights.

I’ll park this matter for a later point point in time.
