404 Monitor not working with my Wordpress theme

After recently installing the Rank Math SEO plugin, I found that the 404 Monitor is not recording any 404s.

I read through the previous support tickets on this issue, and checked that it was not anything simple, such as not setting Redirections > Fallback Behavior to “Default 404” (which is what I have set it to).

What I think might be the issue is the fact that in my WordPress theme Thesis, there is an option to set a custom page that is shown on a 404, and in another support ticket, it was stated that using such a custom 404 page would prevent the 404 Monitor from working.

So to address this, I deselected the custom 404 page that was set in my Thesis theme. But alas, 404s were still not being recorded in the 404 Monitor.

I previously used a plugin called Redirection, which does successfully record 404s on my site. I just don’t seem to be able to get the Rank Math 404 Monitor working. Of course I deactivated Redirection in order to use Rank Math SEO.

Any advice or suggests would be much appreciated.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for the delay and for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

Assuming you are using the latest version of all the plugins and the themes (please update if not yet), it would seem like a conflict with one of the plugins or the theme you are using.

To determine that, please follow this troubleshooting guide:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/

Only the site admin would know and your users won’t be affected by this troubleshooting.

If the issue persists, please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.

Thank you, and we really look forward to helping you.

    Hi Reinelle

Thanks very much for your reply. I checked for conflicts using the plugin you linked to, but did not find any.

We are using the latest version of all the plugins, and the latest version of WordPress, but the Thesis theme we have is an older version (2.9.10 installed, latest version is 2.10.5). Thesis has not been updated, as our Thesis license has expired, and Thesis is no longer available to buy. Might this be the issue?

To give you access to our WordPress site via the “temporary login without password” plugin, what email should I use (the plugin requires an email in order to set up temporary access)?

    Hello,

Thank you for keeping in touch with us.

Can you please try to switch to the default theme (ex.: Twenty-Twenty) and see if the issue goes away? You can use the Health Check plugin so your visitors will not be affected.

Please use this email address s******@r*********** to create your temporary login.

We are looking forward to helping you.

Just tried the Twenty-Twenty default theme using the Health Check plugin, and I can confirm that the 404 Monitor is now working.

So it seems that the issue is with the Thesis theme.

I wonder if there is any workaround, as we do not want to change theme, because this will require a lot of redesigning of the site.

    Hello,

As their theme is having a compatibility issue with Rank Math, I would suggest contacting your theme developer first to inform them of this issue and find a fix.

Do let us know if you need anything else.

    Thank you.

With the WordPress plugin called Redirection (which is one the best known redirection plugins), I find its 404 monitor works fine with my WordPress theme.

When I installed Redirection, I got a message (presumably from Rank Math): “Please keep only one SEO plugin active, otherwise, you might lose your rankings and traffic.”

However, by switching off 404 redirections on Rank Math, the redirections from the Redirection plugin are working fine, and so is the 404 monitor on the Redirection plugin. So I seem to be able to run both Rank Math and Redirection, taking advantage of the working 404 monitor on Redirection.

So this is a workaround for the issue, in case anyone else has this problem of Rank Math’s 404 monitor not working with their theme.

    Hello,

    Thank you for the update.

We appreciate your feedback and your input for a workaround for this issue.

If you have any other concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime by creating a new ticket to assist you further with anything else.

    Thank you.
