Hello, I have a multilingual page and recently I hid one of the languages, plus I changed the official language.

These changes have made that I have:

    172 redirected pages
    115 404 pages
57 Alternate page with proper canonical tag

And I also discovered that changing my images to webp format have now made them to appear as currently not indexed.

Can you please explain to me the solution with your plugin for every point? Thank you

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issues you are facing with your multilingual page and the changes you’ve made. Thank you for raising your concerns. Here’s how you can address each of the points you mentioned using the Rank Math plugin:

    1. 172 Redirected Pages

Since you have hidden one of the languages and changed the official language, it’s likely that some URLs are no longer valid. To manage these redirects effectively, you can set up 301 redirects from the old URLs to the new ones.
You can do this by going to Rank Math > Redirections in your WordPress admin dashboard. Here’s how to create a redirect:

    Rank Math Redirections Tab

    1. Enter the URL you wish to redirect as your Source URL.
    2. Enter the new URL as your Destination URL.
    3. Click on Add Redirection.

If you have many URLs to redirect, consider using bulk redirection options. You can learn more about bulk 301 redirects here.

    2. 115 404 Pages

404 errors indicate that certain pages are not found. If these pages are no longer relevant, you can either:

    • Redirect them to relevant pages using the method mentioned above.
    • If they are deleted content, ensure they return a proper 404 status or consider serving a 410 status if you want to indicate that the content has been permanently removed.

    3. 57 Alternate Page with Proper Canonical Tag

This status indicates that Google has detected duplicate content but recognizes the canonical version. To resolve this:

    • Ensure that the canonical tags are correctly set on your pages. You can refer to our guide on fixing alternate pages with proper canonical tags.
    • If you want to remove certain pages from indexing, consider using 301 redirects instead of canonical tags for those pages.

    4. Images in WebP Format Not Indexed

If your images in WebP format are not indexed, ensure that:

    • The images are properly linked in your content and accessible.
    • You may need to submit a new sitemap to Google Search Console after making changes to your images. Rank Math automatically generates a sitemap for you, which you can find under Rank Math > Sitemap Settings.
    • Check if there are any issues with the image URLs in Google Search Console and resolve them accordingly.
