XML Sitemap Not Updating

I recently noticed that my XML sitemap is not updating and functioning correctly.

If you take a look, there are 3 post sitemaps which ends up equating to 409 links. The problem is that there are 503 published posts on my site.

Clicking on each post sitemap and doing a CTRL+F for some specific keywords, I can confirm from my knowledge that there are certainly well over 100 posts that are not being listed in my sitemap.

I say well over 100 because I’ve actually noted duplicate posts coming up on both post-sitemap 1 and 2, so a lot is going wrong with the XML sitemap.

I first contacted Ezoic who has the caching on my site, and they confirmed that even after clearing the cache (just to be sure), nothing changed (and they don’t cache sitemaps as a rule).

I’m not sure how the sitemap got so messed up for some reason, and it’s my fault for not noticing a whole lot sooner. I just assumed the plugin was working properly.

I look forward to your assistance.

  • Hello, we apologize for the inconvenience you are facing with your XML sitemap not updating correctly and missing over 100 published posts on your site.

To address this issue, please follow these steps:

    1. Check if Your Sitemap is Accessible:

      • Use the httpstatus.io tool to check the status of your sitemap URL. This will help identify any issues preventing Googlebot from accessing your sitemap.

Check if sitemap is accessible in httpstatus tool

    2. Exclude Sitemap from Caching:

    3. Submitted Sitemap is Incorrect:

      • Ensure you have submitted the correct sitemap. Submit sitemap_index.xml and make sure all inner sitemaps like post-sitemap.xml are showing up in your Google Search Console when clicking on sitemap_index.xml file.

If after following these steps the issue persists, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further. Thank you for raising this concern.

I checked the link tool, and it is valid with a 200 response. The other AI bot responses weren’t relevant to the problem or issue.

    Hello,

Thanks for contacting us, and sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused you.

Please share your sitemap URL so we can check this for you.

One possible reason can be that your sitemap is heavily cached. Please follow the steps below to see if it works for you.

#1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

#2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

#3. If the above steps doesn’t seem to work, kindly apply the following filter code to your site.

    add_filter( 'rank_math/sitemap/enable_caching', '__return_false');

Here’s how you can add filter/hook to your WordPress site:

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

Thank you Adetayo. So doing the steps from the video appeared to populate all the posts I’d expect to see as well as clear up the duplicate issue.

    My question now is –

    Why did this happen?

How often do I have to keep checking RankMath to make sure it’s functioning properly with sitemaps?

How can I prevent this from happening again?

    Hello,

This can occur due to the caching on your website.

Caching is a process where your website stores frequently accessed information to improve loading times and reduce server load. However, sometimes this cached data can cause issues and display outdated content. So, if you encounter this problem, you may need to clear your website’s cache to ensure the information is updated.

Please follow the second and third steps in the guide we shared earlier to prevent a reoccurrence.

We hope this helps, and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Thank you.
