WordPress sometimes tends to call this file on the wrong file location which causes the 404 errors.
I can suggest that you reach out to your host so that they can try to reference this file on the location that is reporting this error. They will also be in a better position to advise on whether WP Cron has been disabled sitewide.

Thanks for your receptivity and prompt reply; additionally, I also got like a dozen of hits in “sitemap_index.xml” as a 404 and decided to redirect it to “sitemap.xml” which I believe is my correct sitemap. Should I keep it redirected or what do you think?

The right sitemap is sitemap_index.xml since it is the one generated by Rank Math. You should be careful since I have seen you are also using another sitemap (sitemap.xml) and you should have only one (in this case, since you are using Rank Math, the sitemap_index.xml).
