If you do not use variations and use colours as separate products then you will have duplicate content if colour is the only content difference

1 You can make one colour the nominated canonical url for the other colours but then just the one colour is indexed. BUT QUESTION 1 – Does Google Shopping look at the canonical and list just the one colour?

2 The old Google search console used to have a recommendations tab that highlighted duplicate content issues. I can’t find this feature in the new Search Console is there a way to see this

Thanks – that will start the conversation!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing regarding WooCommerce SEO considerations. Thank you for raising these questions!

    1. Regarding your first question about Google Shopping and canonical URLs: Google Shopping does not specifically use canonical tags to determine which product to list. Instead, it focuses on the product data provided in your feed. If you have multiple products with the same content but different colors, it’s best to ensure that each product has unique attributes and descriptions to avoid being flagged for duplicate content. While setting a canonical URL can help with SEO on search results, it may not directly influence how products are displayed in Google Shopping.

    2. As for your second question about the new Google Search Console, the recommendations tab from the old version has been replaced with different features. You can check for duplicate content issues by looking at the Coverage report and the Performance report. The Coverage report will show you any indexing issues, while the Performance report can help you identify pages that may be underperforming due to duplicate content. Additionally, you can use the URL Inspection Tool to check individual URLs for any issues.

The bot answered well but it doesn’t actually say where to find if any duplicate content exists. For example there is no coverage tab anymore. If you can show me where to find if google considers a page or product duplicate content that would be great

    Hello,

The “Coverage” can be accessed via your GSC’s Indexing tab โ†’ Pages. Please see the screenshot below for your reference:

Under the “No Indexed” tab, the duplicate error should show there if there’s any.

Hope that helps. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thanks
